Smithsonian National Zoo Celebrity owl hit by bus in Washington, D.C.

A snowy owl that had been hanging around in downtown Washington, D.C., and getting lots of attention was apparently hit by a bus somehow. She was taken to the National Zoo for treatment and then transferred to a wildlife care center where she will hopefully recover and be released.

N. Idaho birdwatchers lose northern hawk owl

MOSCOW, Idaho – A northern hawk owl wintering farther south than its normal range and thrilling area bird watchers in northern Idaho has died.

Terry Gray tells the Lewiston Tribune the owl appears to have been hit by a vehicle on Thursday.

Gray had been emailing fellow birdwatchers updates about the owl. One called him to say the owl was lying on Mountain View Road.

Gray says the owl flew to a tree but fell to the ground and was quickly captured.

Gray took the owl to the Raptor Rehabilitation Center at Washington State University Veterinary Hospital but it died a short time later.

Gray says he asked the hospital to donate the owl to the university’s Charles R. Conner Museum, where other birds are mounted.

So, if you're a birder and you hear the thump, are you allowed to count the bird?

if you see the bird before the bus hit it then yes. If the bird is still alive after the bus hit it then yes. If it is dead then no. If you only heard the thump then no -- "heard-only" is slack birding which should be stamped out. If you heard the thump but then didn't see the bird until after it was boxed up and at the vet then no. If you see the bird after release once it is better then yes.
