Taronga Zoo change to opening hours

Just received a letter from taronga zoo advising that they will be changing their opening hours, prompted by...the seasons. winter opening hours are now 930am to 430pm, whilst in summer the zoo will open at 930am and stay open to five.
what are people's thoughts on this one? i can half understand the winter opening hours...but the summer ones? i would rather them open the zoo earlier (and in an ideal world stay open later too) during the summer, as, lets face it, the animals are more active earlier on.
anyone know what has prompted this move? the cynic in me says cost-cutting.

Possibly for security reasons. It gets dark around 5pm these days (early if it's overcast), and it's easy for security to do a sweep of the zoo and ensure everyone has left while it's still light.

Yeah, the winter hours kind of make sense, but I definitely agree regarding Summer; it would be nice if the hours were longer, including an earlier start and a later closing time.

However, perhaps they reviewed visitor statistics (entry times) to determine the new opening hours. Maybe they found out the majority of visitors are arriving after 9:30am.

The zoo has always opened at 9:30. The keepers start work at 6:00 and 7:00 and it takes that long to clean the enclosures and get things ready for the day head.

An old guidebook which I have from about 1960 advertises Taronga's opening hours as: "9.30 a.m. to Sunset. No admission after 5 p.m."

This means that in mid-summer it was open until about 8 p.m.

taronga has had 9 to 5 opening hours, 365 days of the year, for as long as i could remember, up until now, obviously

I loved the late opening times in Summer. Recently, I think it only lasted for a few years (late 90s) early 2000s...?
I remember catching the ferry as the sun set and fog blanketed the city.

What would be cool is if the zoo opened late in Summer at least one night a week, say a Thursday, and had reduced entry after 5pm (similar to what the Easter Show does/did with their cheaper tickets after 5).
So many Sydney institutions are now having these special nights during the week (Art Gallery, Australian Museum).
