Last summer, having exhausted most of the zoological options available in Shanghai, I visited this lesser known aquarium. To my surprise and delight, although it lacks show stopping exhibits or rarities (apart from the subsequently departed belugas), it is actually a very fine aquarium indeed and judged on the basis of 'least worst exhibit' is arguably one of the best zoos in China.
It's certainly quite heavily family-focused but that didn't stop me enjoying my visit. Sadly I don't have a species list and I am not that 'fish-aware'; my suspicion is that most of what I saw is relatively common. Given that Shanghai Ocean Aquarium has a wide array of rarities it's understandable that it hogs the spotlight, but I hope some other travellers find time to squeeze this onto their itinerary; it deserves more attention than it has received thus far on the site.
