Visited 20/11.
No sign of the Dorcas gazelles and not listed on the website, appear to have been replaced with Kirk’s Dik-diks that are now both in the old lemur island and in some of the other Wanyama paddocks.
A few of the more exotic species seem to have disappeared since my last visit 5 years ago - no Giant Wood Rail? No Fossa, no Lac Aloatran Gentle Lemurs.
Wanyama village on the whole felt a bit unloved. Sitatunga off the plains area and three females in a small pen. A pair of black-crowned cranes in another small pen, the dik-diks, an ankole-Watusi and some dwarf goats. Southern ground hornbills were rather active trying to reach things outside their aviary.
As for the Savannah it seemed reasonably busy. Decent group of common Eland and three Grevy’s zebra. Seemingly locked out of the Savannah we’re 5 Rothschild’s giraffes and a pair of ostriches. Looks like they still hold that male Reticulated giraffe? I’m not 100% though, anyone confirm?
Outside of Wanyama, trail of kings also felt a bit unloved. Empty exhibit, the Binturong and a pair of red foxes up one end. A Caracal and a serval seemingly rotating exhibits, some ring-tailed coatis and the lion pair in the middle and then the gorillas and a huge bush dog exhibit up the other end in the former tiger exhibit.
Beyond those two main areas the AMAZU was partially closed off (odd for a zoo day), skunk and raccoons appear to be having some work done to their enclosure. A very healthy sized group of squirrel monkeys. Spider monkeys illusive as always and tucked up indoors, no signs of the Agouti’s that used to share. Seemingly a pair of Military Macaws and a single yellow-naped Amazon in an aviary. A Cuban rock iguana and some red-footed tortoises in a small enclosure next door.
Then outside those main area’s the remaining few species dotted around. Tigers in the new area, all largely unseen although I suspect it’s pretty good when they’re more active. Like the bridge. Penguin’s had a healthy-sized active group and the otters looked down to just three. Sea Lions we’re active as ever whilst there’s another group of coati’s in the new rainforest area, near the tigers, also featuring some Sulcatta tortoises too. An armadillo enclosure randomly dotted around somewhere too.
And beyond that all that’s left is the sealife, which I did enjoy a lot but species list online is pretty outdated. Only sharks are a single horn shark and a handful of tiny blacktip reef sharks. Still small as ever but a nice selection of species, nothing too special though.
A bit sad that much of AMAZU was still shut off during a zoo weekend but beyond that it was an alright day. Just get the impression this place is really turning into a 100% theme park with a handful of animals on the side. Wouldn’t be surprised if in 5-10 years it nearly all rides with a handful of abc animals - the tigers in their new territory, the lion and gorillas in trail of kings, humboldt’s penguins and ASC otters by the entrance, squirrel monkeys near the climbing area, a handful of owls for displays and maybe the giraffes, ostrich and zebra behind the resort hotel. Maybe the rhinos for the ZUFARI ride. I suspect the SeaLife will stay but not really anyway comparable to the other bigger ones. Lastly I suspect the petting zoo will stick around and the Sea Lions maybe. Nothing for real zoo-goers though.
I really get the impression the ‘less exciting’ species are simply getting phased out tbh.
