Not much to see today, the zoo was very quiet.

The Hawk Owls are now on show, in seperate aviaries.

New in RORA are White-rumped Shamas and Peacock Mantis.

Maintenace work is being undertaken on the chimp island.

The only reptiles on view in the Tropical Realm are Radiated Tortoise, Galapagos Giant Tortoise and Philippine Crocodile. A tall wooden fence has been built in front of the old the old vivaria.

The new exhibits seem to be two large open air enclosures near the entrance and two glass enclosures beyond them. There is also a new enclosure under construction in part of the invertebrate row. No information as to what the new enclosures will look like.

The only invertebrates on show were Deathshead cockroach and African Flower Beetle. The Tarictic Hornbill female is nesting.

The monorail was closed, and the Monkey House station ticket machines have been removed. One train has now been given a tiger skin livery.

Gardeners were busy working in the reedbed by the elephants.

In the Tsavo aviary were many weaver nests, and a hamerkop nest. The only birds I saw were 3 Superb Starlings and a Hottentot Teal.

The Membership and Adoptions office is now situated by the entrance.

Thanks for the report Rob.

If we're thinking about the same thing, that little membership office (basically a wooden shed with a ramp) has been on the left of the main entrance (as you go in) for a while now.

Interesting about the monorail tickets, that's the most accessible station so perhaps they're just being replaced.

Could you guess, based on the design of the enclosures, what might be going in those open areas in the tropical house? Some sort of ground-dwelling reptile maybe?

Didn't happen to see any Javan Tiger or Dodo did you? :D  ;)

Btw read the Baby dik dik thread and you will realise what i'm on about :)

I think visitors have to pay at the station itself for a trip on the monorail as opposed to buying a ticket from the machine (almost certain I saw a sign saying that over Christmas)

Regarding the tiger striped monorail, I believe their is also a snake patterned one.

There was a dodo, in Islands in Danger.

Also forgot to list tuatara as still on show in Tropical Realm, I can't guess what the new exhibits will hold.

Jimmy there was a sign by the entrance to the station, but it had fallen off and was face down on the path. Perhaps it was the one you saw, so maybe the monorail was working but not much used, I never looked at Jubilee station ticket machines.

Rob, have the Gila Monsters been taken off-show now?

Last Thursday they were in hibernation (according to the sign) but were still visible in their burrow. The lights in their vivarium had been turned off.

I expect you're right and they are hibernating. I saw the enclosure was dark and didn't go to look. They did the same thing last winter I think.
