Going to Chester on Thursday 29th October anyone want any infomation or pictures?

on the website yesterday it said the meerkats / macaques / oryx were all off show for the foreseeable future. can you investigate why??

Dont feel theres much point in starting a new thread, so just a few notes and questions from my visit yesterday

Macaques are indeed on-show. I didnt see a single Lion Tailed Macaque though? Was this bad luck on my part or have the zoo just reported on the wrong Macaque?
Oryx can be seen on the hardstand area. Obviously no good for photos or good viewing.
Didnt bother going to see the Tsavo Meerkats but the Childrenes Ffarm ones are most definatly off-show

No sign of the Horses. Have they left then? Or is this old news. Their enclosure was rumoured (confirmed?) as the new Wild Dog enclosure wasnt it.

Scarlet Ibis seem to have gone aswell. Very dissapointed. One of my favorite bird species.

Bush Dogs back in their enclosure opposite the Serval with Mongooses back in the round enclosure next to the Kangaroos. No sign of the Pudu in this area. Are they in with the Spider Monkeys yet? Judging from my visit, its going to be next to impossible viewing them unless the zoo does something.

First time seeing the Warty Pigs in their new enclosure. Im pleased you can see them on ground level aswell. As far as I can tell though there is only 1 pig enclosure. Instead of a second, they've expanded the Deer enclosure.

There were a few minor construction work happening. One was inside Tsavo I which meant the majority of the Rhinos were outside. In fact I saw a total of 7, a personal best I think. There was also some work happening in the Pelican Aviary next to the African Aviary. Pelicans were still on-show though but instead of being in their usual spot at the middle of the lake they were to the side. Great view.

Saw both Bears. The male seems to be out and about a lot more than Loja and Strolch were. The female was up some of the poles where the Coatis can sometimes be seen. Speaking of the Coatis, has anyone actually seen them recently?

No sign of the Pied Tamarins thought seeing the Marmosets for the first time since the Mini Golf monstrosity was opened made up for it. Saw 2 Black Lion Tamarins in the cage next to the main indoor area. Never seen any monkeys in there before. Are they being introduced? Or has the second Tamarin been there long and im just slow on the in-take?

Elephants Of The Asian Forest aviary looking a bit empty recently. On the 2 visits I made there, only saw 2 Magpies. Could do with a few more birds.

Saw what im fairly certain was the Barbets in the African Aviary for the first time aswell as everything else bar the Chats and Teals. It does need some more birds though I have to say that part of the aviarys charm probably is that you actually have to stay for a while to view some birds.

No birds to be seen in the Asian Aviary as usual. Though I could hear a few of them inside.

Didnt see any Sealions today or Hyacinth Macaws, the majority of the other Parrots were showing themselves well though. No Babirusa or Rufous Bellied Niltava either. Im a bit jealous of people who have managed to see either of these ever since they went on-show.

Thats it I think. I apologize for how long the post is.

Zoomania:

Lion-tailed and Sulawesi Macaques were on show

Children's farm meerkats enclosure is empty for refurbishment according to the sign and the Tsavo ones are off-show according to their sign

No sign of the Oryx

Przewalski Horses are still there

Pudu are behind the giraffe house in the old okapi/babirusa paddock

The coatis were out and hanging around the poles towards the back with the new female bear

I saw 1.2 sealions today and both babirusa, but no sign of the otter pair.

------------------------------

and to further hijack this thread:

The caiman lizard vivarium in the Tropical Realm has been gutted and is in the process of a refurb (the crab and snake tanks nerby are offlimits whilst this work is done)

There's been a porcupine birth

There is two enclosures, the second one is mostly under the walk way (if I remember correctly).

On wednesday i didn't visit the following:
Realm of the Red Ape (Packed as usual. Looked at outside enclosures)
Asian Plains
Children's Farm

Ask me questions about anything else.

Thank you Jimmy & Taun, it would appear it was mostly bad luck on my part regarding the Horses, Babirusa, Sealions and Macaques then.

I have only seen the Babirusa in the new enclosure once since they moved in. :(

Any news on the elephants? Is Upali with the herd nowadayws or still seperated most of the time?

He is usually separate, however it was rumoured a while back that at least one of the elephants was pregnant, however I have not heard anything new on this.

Interesting that despite our several Chester posters, there isn't any recent news on the elephants. The staff must be pretty sure if anybody is pregnant (Jangoli?). It seems the calf Raman did die from the Herpes virus, though it doesn't appear to have been announced officially.

When I've visited I've always seen both babirusa, but I have never seen the otters in the new enclosure.

Not sure about the rest of the Chester posters but I don't even give the Elephants a second glance. I take a look to see who’s out and about and then head on my merry way to much more interesting species (in my opinion).
