Chester Zoo Chester Zoo 2007

Which of the female komodo dragons is going? What is the plan for this species?
Don`t know which female is going yet as i don`t think its been decided, but don`t panic they will be keeping Komodos because they want to breed using Norman.

I think it is a move recommended by the studbook keeper.

There are quite a few zoos in Europe only keeping males at the moment and even those that have been paired up might be closely related pairings!

The second female could go to either of 6 locations: zoos in Antwerpen, Barcelona, Eskilstuna, Fuengirola, Lisboa and Thoiry that are currently without females.

Colchester Zoo keeps 2 females too and is most likely have 1 also exchanged for 1 surplus male from the Continent.

Looking at gentle lemur's excellent photo of a shedding tuatara at Chester, got me to thinking with 1.5 tuatara at Chester, is there any sign of breeding and with the zoo down to one male will Berlin be willing to pool their resources into creating a potential breeding group?
p.s how many tuataras do Berlin have and are there any other in Europe, i don't believe there is, in any zoo anyway.

Affirmative. Berlin Zoo is the only other European zoo to exhibit the species. I have been there several times. They do have a great exhibit for them, but they are totally invisible.

Must check the numbers though!

And yes I wish both would pool resources and perhaps set up 1 male/1-2 female swap to stimulate breeding. They are a long lived species and mature rather late in life (since both were imported as juveniles, it is not surprising no breeding has taken place YET (but Chlidonias will testify to the fact that it is damn hard doing and even NZ collections are not rife with breeding them).

Nessie is leaving. I can't remember where she was going to but that collection lost their male, so it's on hold at the moment.

Nessie was asttacked by a previous male at Chester and is wary of the new male, on the other hand Flora is quite keen to go in with him. They hope for a natural breeding soon.
