I think I must be unlucky with it Dave. Chester had them for years. I never caught so much as a glance. The archetypal no-show. The smell was only thing that convinced me they were for real! :-)

Yeah, I have heard about Chester's famously elusive maned wolves :p

Sadly there is probably bugger-all chance of Giant Armadillo, which is what I would like to go in there!

It's about as unlikely as it gets. I'd love to see them (somewhere) too, but I'm not sure they have the presence (for want of a better word) to really fill a showpiece exhibit such as SotJ.

I would agree that Maned Wolves would be a logical option (although as someone who was brought up visiting Chester I too have doubts over whether they'd show well), although I liked Waddi's suggestion of tapir/capybara in the outdoor enclosure.

The special thing about this enclosure is that it can hold just about any large mammal - indeed on one 'walk & talk' session our friendly neighbourhood curator pointed it out that it could hold a T. rex if need be. There is a real value in having an enclosure like this for contingencies, such as the current situation with the sun bears.

I personally like the idea of having either puma or maned wolves in the exhibit. Although I too will add my (wasted) wishes to the list of ever seeing giant armadillos in a European zoo!! :')
I don't think the maned wolves would be a bad choice. I don't know if they'd be a likely choice of course, but the scope and space is certainly there. I am in agreement also that the indoor area of SotJ needs a bit more livening up. With the sloths soon to be circulating between indoors and outdoors, and the ants and tank not as eye popping as a random visitor might have hoped, perhaps some birds (eg sunbittern, Montserrat oriole etc) would do the trick flying around in there.
I dunno. I wouldn't mind seeing maned wolves over pumas, though I am ashamed to admit I have never seen a puma in captivity (it's the only 'big' cat species I haven't seen, I've seen lion, tiger, leopard, jaguar, snow leopard, cheetah, Indochinese clouded leopard and Bornean clouded leopard, in a rescue centre in Borneo, and it bugs me) so they would be cool to see.

Also, may be seen as slightly unrelated, but does anyone remember when there were maned wolves at London Zoo where the squirrel monkeys are now? Because I do (I was only a little lad at the time but I remember it very clearly).

I don't remember that, but I do remmember grey wolves in the 1990s , maybe the maned wolves replaced them.

Chester's maned wolves were the least showy of any I know of, I never had any trouble seeing them at other zoos

Would it not be possible to move the Spectacled bears to the empty jaguar enclosure, that would help with the theming of the area with a big name and possibly provide more viewing opportunities than at present.

I remember the Maned Wolves being there in the late 90s :) Probably got some photos in an album somewhere too
