Chester Zoo 30th Spetember 2009

It seemed strange visiting today as I practically had the entire zoo to myself. Quite a change form the crowds of July and August.

The round enclosure by the kangaroos is now empty and the bush dogs are again living across the path from the servals. I saw all the six dogs, and also both servals together for the first time. Some teenage girls told me the bush dogs were the cutest animals they had ever seen, but I bet they say that about everything.

There is a digger in the fountain Gardens and some beds have been cleared.

The new male Fiji Banded Iguana is on show, seperate from the female. The vivarium formerly containing the young Komodo dragon is being refurbished (same for the baby Komodo vivarium in Islands in Danger).

Also in the Tropical Realm the Brown-breasted Barbets are now on show, in the Congo Peafowl aviary along with the White-crested Turacos. The end aviary now has the Green Wood Hoopoes.

There is maintenance work going on alongside the Caiman Lizard exhibit. This small area was closed.

The new warty pig enclosure seems to be finished, the adjacent deer enclosure has been extended as per the plans. The pair of pigs in the southern enclosure of the Cattle House have another baby.

No one seemed to be interested in the mini golf.

The Ark Shop was closed for stocktaking, much to the disappointment of several groups of school children.

I had the butterfly house to myself for several minutes, apart from a gardener who was pruning some of the plants. I got my first good look at it, and I like it.

One of the giraffe team told me that a female Rothschild's is arriving soon, from a zoo in The Netherlands, she couldn't remember where.

The female lechwe are in the old emu paddock, the male is still in quarantine behind the giraffe house.

To my surprise the Tsavo aviary seemed to be devoid of birdlife apart form a male weaver and the pair of hammerkops, one of which was feeding in the small stream which runs through the aviary. I thought with less visitors there would be more chance of seeing the birds, the opposite seemed to be the rule.

Both female rhinos were outside with their babies.

The area formerly occupied by the otters and aviaries is roped off and a sign says this area is to become an exciting addition to the Oakfield.

No, the roan have the big field to themselves, but I think the lechwe have been moved to keep the grass under control. It's what a keeper told me earlier this year.

Hope both the species are mixed again think it's better, will they be making both paddocks as one?

Good news on another baby warty pig, and would explain why I saw the female collecting nesting material on the 26th.

Good news the female giraffe is arriving soon.

Any idea on what this development could be? On the natural vision plans there is a pool/pond is that area.
