I thought that Chester are starting to have a few babies around, it might be good to have a 'Births' thread for the year - I'm sure when the major births happen it will come in useful...

So, the following mammals have bred this year:
6 Visayan Warty Pigs
3 Meerkats
3 Banded Mongooses
1 Gemsbok
1 Scimitar Horned Oryx
2 Vicuna
1 Pudu

And as I think we all know by now the following are due:
2 Asian Elephants
1 Rothschild's Giraffe

Thanks to Bongorob I can add these:

6 Rodrigues Fruit Bats
2 Ring-Tailed Lemurs
2 Red Ruffed Lemurs
2 Lion-Tailed Macaques
3 Sulawesi Crested Macaques
1 Congo Buffalo
1 Sitatunga
1 Crested Porcupine

Aswell everyonce in a while update the overall list and post it, as I would like to see their success over the year!

Are we doing all animals or just mammals, as that seems to be the case at the moment.

well mammals is my area of knowledge, but others may feel free to post about any other births

If I find out anything at any point, I would just post all of them. Mammals are my biggest area of knowledge, but also like to keep up-to-date with some of the birds/reptiles etc.

There is also a Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) chick, but at the moment you either need to be ten feet tall or walk around with a step ladder to be able to see it.

Don't know if this is actually news to anyone or not, but it would seem from my visit on 29th June that there is at least one newborn Red Panda - it was visible on the video screen outside the enclosure, but furthermore, myself and my girlfriend spent a rather happy few minutes watching the mother licking the cub on the monitor, and occasionally taking it outside briefly (maybe to dry it off if, as we sort of suspected, it had only just been born that morning)

Very interesting, I shall keep an eye out next time I'm there :)

To take the original thread on a slightly different direction, I wondered if it would be appropriate to consider what births we are all really hopeful to be seeing in the near future. It has been reported previously that both the Okapi and Bears have been seen mating. Ofcourse this does not mean we will see births, but it is surely a good sign!

I haven't been able to qualify this, but it does seem as though there is a great success rate lately with breeding. So, hopefully things bode well...

I hope the cheetahs breed in a year or so. That would be great.

Over the next, say, 5 years, I would like to see the following bred by Chester:

Sumatran Tiger
Giant Otter
Andean Condor
African Wild Dogs
Black Rhinoceros
Indian Rhinoceros
Okapi
Cheetah
Philippine Crocodile
Spectacled Bear

A long list and most probably aren't even in the pipeline for that timeframe. What does everybody think?

Oh great another thread going in a different direction from what it started aa why not just create a thread were you can guess and speculate about what species, may or not breed at Chester and leave this thread for what has actually been born!!
