Hi there, I was hoping somebody could share some information on any ongoing/previous conservation projects at Chester Zoo for the lion tailed macaque Macaca silenus.

Also if anybody knows of any other conservation projects in other zoos.

Any information will be appreciated.

Try looking on the zoo's website for the annual report,as in it there is a section listing all the conservation projects that the zoo currently works with!

Hi, thank you for the response. I have downloaded and printed off the annual report on mammals at Chester Zoo.

However, I require more information on the ongoing, or previous conservation projects that relate to the lion tailed macaque at chester zoo (or any other zoo if anybody knows of any).

I have searched google scholar and tried some other sources so far but can only find articles on the effect that zoo visitors has on this species.

Thanks again

This might sound like an obvious suggestion, but have you tried writing to the zoo itself or visiting the library there?

Note: the library is currently closed, pending a new librarian.

Yeah going to call Chester zoo tomorrow. I am desigining a poster concerning The Role of Zoos in Primate Conservation of the Species Macaca silenus (at Chester Zoo) or any other zoos if possible.

Basically trying to pick up as much information as I can.

Thanks again.

The range country of Lion-tailed macaques is India, a fairly wealthy (though unequally so) country, with a history of colonial domination by Britain. If you research some of the struggles around silent valley, you will see there have been significant battles to conserve this species in situ that haven't required a european zoo to step in and coordinate efforts.

I could have missed something, indeed if Chester or any other zoo are contributing funds to in situ work with this species, it would not necessarily be listed in the mammal section of their annual report - most collections have a specific section detailing their in situ work further on in the annual report.

Therefore, as with other European collections holding this species, you might find that Chester just hold a managed group as part of the EEP. I would look at the EAZA website/activities/collection planning for further information about who coordinates the EEP for lion-tailed macaques currently.
