Unfortunately, I haven't been to Chester Zoo since July 2007. I've just had a look at their latest animal list and note there are no marsupials. When did Chester Zoo stop having marsupials in its collection?

I might be incorrect saying this, Western Grey Kangaroos left for Exmoor a couple of years ago to make way for the Giant Anteaters. The Wallabies had left a few years before that at about the same time as the Emus. Put simply, Australian fauna isn't, as far as I'm aware, in the collection plan.

That about covers it.

The grey kangaroos left in 2011 and were the last of the marsupials at Chester Zoo.

when I saw the thread title I was hoping bongorob might have a list on here! I actually expected more species to have been kept over Chester's history, and most of these are pretty mundane. Even Twycross had more exciting marsupials on show.

Personally I think it's a bit poor for a zoo of Chester's standing to have no marsupials at all now!!

They should get some devils

A nice idea!
I think a New Guinea exhibit in the second phase of Islands would be a very interesting project - imagine some cuscus, mountain wallabies and tree kangaroos (with echidna, Pesquet's parrots, some lories and a few birds of paradise of course).
An alternative marsupial that would really fit into Islands would be the bear cuscus from Sulawesi. I also notice only one South American marsupial on bongorob's list, how about yapok in the foyer of the Bat Cave?
I think I'm getting carried away

Perhaps …, just overseas (LOL … :D) we are dependent pretty much now on what yours truly in Australia and New Zealand are willing and able to spare us over here!

To be honest: I really would like to see some more and fruitful exchanges and (conservation breeding) cooperation in terms of animals both from the Antipodes and exotics from overseas (read: Europe et cetera) vice versa back to the Antipodes. I would work wonders both ways and benefit both regions.

There has been a slight glimmer of hope lately and I can think of a good number of exotic species of benefit / interest to the ARAZPA / ZAA region that might come its way if more robust inter-regional zoo region cooperation would come to fruition. BTW: we need a good sponsor in DHL or something to transfer animal stock back and forth …

Sorry, to be a bit off topic here!!!

@gentle lemur, fully seconded that. Whether it is part and parcel of future development … I think they had cassowary down for the Islands?

is the list earlier from Zootierliste, or the Chester records? I'm interested in why fruticus is still being used if the former. The type specimen of rufogriseus was from King Island, and all the island populations around Tasmania are now quite rightly treated as being the same (i.e. M. r. rufogriseus). There are thus only two subspecies, the nominate rufogriseus on Tasmania and surrounding islands, and banksianus on the mainland.

Chester has also, of course, shown Echidna in the (relatively recent) past. [So monotreme in addition to marsupial]

To have no marsupials is poor in my book, but Chester has a lot of gaps .......

I don't think that there is any collection in the UK that doesn't have a gap in the terms of the species they keep!

The list is mine and uses the names in use at the time I compiled it.

I did not know that the two ssp were the same and I will ammend it. Thanks Chlidonias.
