It is time for my forth biennial update to the Chester Zoo old species thread.

Guyanan Red Howler (Alouatta macconnelli) 1950 mentioned in Animals in the Blood by Russell Tofts.
Coke's Hartbeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus cokii) 1953

re-indentified
Pygmy Mouse (Mus minutoides) was Matthey's Mouse (Mus mattheyi)

Leopard Cats identified as Indochinese Leopard Cat and Margays in the 1980s identified as Yucatan Margay, both thanks to Zoochatter TeaLovingDave.

Iguanidae subfamilies elevated to family status. Corytophanidae, Crotophytidae, Dactyloridae (replaces Polychrotinae) and Phrynosomatidae.

Leaf Insects listed under common names and Phyllium scythe has been merged into P.bioculatum

The reference to Chester having recorded a UK first breeding of Baslliscus basiliscus has been deleted, this species was reared at Paignton in 1972.

I had a vague recollection of there being two species of Tiger kept at the same time in the early eighties. The list mentions Amur Tiger consecutively throughout the eighties. The list also mentions Bengal Tigers in 1981 and Sumatran Tigers in 1983. Anyone else recall two separate sub species of Tiger kept at Chester at the same time?

I think I can remember seeing a single Sumatran tiger in the old big cat pens (where the bat forest is now) - and I think bengals were probably there as well, with the Amur ones in the current (but smaller) tiger enclosure...
 
you are correct Wolverine.

Bengal (or more likely hybrids) and Amur were housed in the zoo between 1978 and 1981/

Sumatran and Amur were housed in the zoo between 1983 and 1986.
 
Thanks Wolverine and bongorob. I had always thought that my memory had played tricks on me. Chester in the early 80's had the best cat collection I've ever seen.
 
James's Flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi) 1971-1978 confirmed, was there a large flock, what sort of numbers?

According to my old zoo magazine with the history of flamingos kept at Chester they didn't have them until 1972!

So in listed below are what numbers they had for when they kept the species

1972 they had 5
1973 they had 4
1974 they had 4
1975 they had 4
1976 they had 4
1977 they had 3
1978 they had 2
1979 they had 2

In 1979 they sent the last 2 to Slimbridge,along with 1 Lesser and Andean in exchange for some Caribbeans!

" Some exciting new arrivals in the Bird Section are seven James's Flamingos (Phoenicoparrus jamesi) and three Andean flamingos (Phoenicoparrus andinus). We now have representatives of all six species of Flamingo which may be seen in enclosure no.43"

Enclosure no.43 is where the Caribbean Flamingos are now.

I found the list Zoogiraffe quoted as not matchng the records from the Zoo News

Thanks for the info guys, appreciate it, wish they were more successful with them.
 
At the time all six species were kept in the same enclosure which was not designed for flamingo breeding. It had previously held pelicans, penguins and mixed wterfowl, though not at the same time
