"We almost don’t have to talk to the animals, because their physiology can tell us how they are feeling, how healthy they are, and all of these different things"

John O'Hanlon, 30, sifts through faecal samples in a lab at Chester Zoo, the only one of its kind in any European zoo. It's not the most glamorous job, he and his colleagues tell me, especially where carnivore waste is concerned, but John is working on cutting-edge research that could help bring species back from the brink of extinction, and perhaps bring humans closer to understanding the inner lives of animals.
