Chester Zoo Chester's bornean orangutans

Does anyone have any info re the Bornean Orangs at Chester? I have yet to see these in the RORA. I was told they had a new male and female arrive a few months back but were still in quarantine at the time. A Keeper told me the male (Sibu ??) that had returned from another zoo (featured on Zoo Days) had died a few months after his return resultant from poor care at the other zoo.
 
The 3 females are Martha and her 2 daughters Leia and Sarikei

Tuan was brought in from Antwerp as the breeding male

There was talk of a male arriving from Berlin, but no-one knew for definate

Sibu is the one who returned and it is sad news if he has indeed died.

(i've got the feeling i'm missing one out...)

I think the male and female in quarantine who Andii was referring to would've been Tuan and Donna although i believe they were never in quarantine at the same time

ISIS also lists 1.4 so Sibu must've sadly died
 
I did notice the other day, that the Lar Gibbons (well, at least 1) have finally been mixed with the Borneans. I'd only ever seen them with the Sumatrans in the 2 years that they've been at the zoo.
 
if Sibu has died, that is sad but for the zoo possibly a blessing in disguise as he was difficult with both enclosures and females and would have been difficult to rehome yet again..

Same today, 3 bornean Orangs and at least one gibbon. Interesting because this gibbon was calling to another gibbon in the outside area. :confused:

No sign of Sibu or Taun :confused:
 
Thanks for the info, are the Bornean orangs in the RORA as you immediately enter - ie. in the first enclosure? I saw a couple when we visited about 2 weeks ago, both under sacks. We visited again last Wed, the enclosure was empty again.

Yes those are the Borneans. They seem more fond of the hessian sacks than the Sumatrans and they often go back into the old house which is off-show

Why was he a problem? Did he not get on with the females? I did speak to a lady who knew them well and said one of the males was problematic as he had a fixation on a female keeper and was aggressive with the other female orangs and he also ate soil so couldn't go outside. It was a keeper who mentioned that he had passed away after returning from another zoo with mouth abscesses through neglect. It all seems to be hush hush, perhaps there's some legal issues going on with the other zoo? I never saw him :( other than on Zoo Days and he was an awesome fella by what I saw.

Sibu was a troublesome Orang on his enclosure at Barcelons as he repeatedly tryed to take it apart piece by piece

The reason you never saw him was because he lived in the original Orang enclosure (behind a wall of logs and completely offshow)

Thanks again, I suspected those were the Borneans, looks like I'm in for a long wait hoping to get some decent photos of them then? The Bornean males are my favourite so it's a real shame about Sibu. Not to worry, Puluh makes up for it - he's a lovely example of a Sumatran male. :)

It's been 2 years since RORA opened and i have seen the Borneans about 6 times (and only 3 times clearly). This is with 10-15 visits per year as well.

Sibu was indeed the male you describe here. He did not get on with any of the females he was put with. He started to destroy the enclosure he lived in at Barcelona Zoo. I am very surprised to hear he came back to chester suffering from any form of neglect though as latterly he was at Apenheul in Holland- a finer Primate Park you will not find!:confused:
 
The Lar gibbon in with the Borneans is the female she has been removed because she had attacked 1 of the males.
