Last year, for the first time ever, chimpanzees were recorded hunting and killing young lowland gorillas in Loango, Gabon (see thread below):
Chimpanzees seen killing gorillas
Recent research done in the Goualougo Triangle, part of Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park in Republic of Congo, has shown that there Western lowland gorillas and chimpanzees formed social relationships that persisted over years and across contexts. There are many potential reasons for these relationships, potentially including advanced predator detection and increased foraging opportunities. They engaged in a range of interactions, from play to aggression and simulated mating between younger animals.
This research may also help inform us about relationships between early hominids - it was previously believed that all encounters would have been aggressive but this shows there may have been a more complex relationship than first thought.
