The best time of year to visit!
We went to colchester on Saturday (27th) and it was a joy :D Although it was freezing it was a fantastic day, lovely to walk off all the christmas food  (well some of it) and only the very keen zoo goers were there, people that know their leopard from their cheetah :D

Saw Troy the new damara zebra from Manor house although i must say all he did was follow round shadow the zeedonk ;) hmmmm not quite what he is supposed to be there for!

Orangutan forest, the Asian giant pond turtles are now in their tank and so are the asian frogs! The aquarium is maturing and looks like it will be in use soon!
No sign of a new orangutan and Rajang was just sitting by the glass spitting out what looked like pomegranate seeds and putting them in and out of his mouth!

No work on the new tropical house yet!

Most of the animals seem to be out enjoying the cold weather including all the wolves for once! Annouska and Igor were loving it and Sasha the white tiger was asleep as usual

Looks like stumpy the hunting dog (our name for him as he has lost his tail in a fight) take over bid for the pack has worked! he was the lowest ranked dog so what an achievement for him! We always felt so sorry for him as he was constantly picked on! GO GO the underdogs :D

Hoping to go the Banham Zoo on the 2nd of January as the tiger cubs are now leaving the den regularly! That is if the cold I managed to get at Colchester on Saturday has gone :p

Bit late but happy christmas every one and hope next year is a good one for you all!

Work was supposed to start in Autumn 2008 and the project to be completed by late 2010 but maybe it was held up by Orangutan forest!

Not sure if obtained planning permission yet? hope it doesnt get credit crunched :p:rolleyes:

Have they announced that a new orangutan is on the way? Are they going for Sumatrans or Borneans?

I thought they had applied to the EEP to house 1.1 Sumatran Orangutans. Someone mention it on here a while back.

Notice that was put up in November

How is Rajang?
As most of you are aware, sadly our female orangutan Djambe died on 25th October 2008.
Initially Rajang showed signs of distress following this loss which is not surprising as they shared the same enclosure for over 10 years.
His keepers spent a great deal of time with him in the following days and he seems now to be much more settled, interacting with the public and is back to his old ways.
Orangutans are naturally solitary animals and although they can live in the same area quite comfortably, they do not require the same social intervention such as a social animal like a chimpanzee does.

Therefore orangutans can live quite happily on their own.

HOWEVER WE DO HAVE PLANS TO BRING IN ANOTHER FEMALE ORANGUTAN IN THE NEAR FUTURE

No idea where from or what sort I suppose it depends whether the female will be used for breeding once Rajang has sadly gone

has work started on the new amur leopard house yet?
what species are the frogs?
Is there anything in the tank on the wall at the top of the ramp in orang forest near to where you go outside?

No not started on the amur leopard enclosure they had moved the tamarins out but had golden head ones in there now?

Not sure what species frog were and sorry didnt go up the ramp to look outside it was so cold that we were making the most of rajangs new warm house!
