Colchester Zoo Colchester Zoo news 2011

I visited Colchester on Saturday afternoon of last week.

The area put together for the sun bear enclosure has been cleared and with all the relevant enclosures demolished.

Sasha's enclosure now has had the platfrom removed and the enclosure has a lot of wooden poles put into place.

The new smooth coated otter enclosure is quite good, with that area looking very differnt to what it looked like when the seal pool was there but the otters were inside. One thing which confused me was that there was enclosure for them and then next door was a glass fronted enclosure with a bit of pond. Why put the latter in?????

If anyone has any ques for me then please ask away.

Ive got a couple of questions!! :D
Do you know of any progress with locating a new 0:1 Amur Tiger?
Also the African Hunting Dogs are they still a breeding pack? And the enclosure to the left of them has been empty for some time now, would you happen to know why??

Cheers :)

Just received the new issue of Zoo Matters. A few interesting notes:

- The outdoor chimp enclosure is to be re-modeled and expanded (No details/dates given).
- The new lemur walk through to be "the best enclosure of this type in the country". The train will drop people off at the entrance of the walk through and return to collect them. The increased water caused by the nearby quarry makes this area no longer suitable for a "heavy footed" species.
- Sun bear enclosure due to be finished by late 2012.
- The eggs laid by the komodo dragon via 'virgin birth' were proved to be infertile.

Does anyone know what species of lemur will be on show? Will it be the excisting lemurs at the zoo or will the zoo be getting in some new lemur species?

I'm sorry but I don't know the first 2 ques. As for the third I think it's still used for the Jakals? Unless you're reffering to the African Hunting dog enclosure?

Quick update from today:

-Blue magpies are currently being held in worlds apart, Waldrapp Ibis appear to have left the collection as the enclosure these species were sharing have been demolished to make way for the new sun bear enclosure.
-Lemur walkthrough appears to be progressing well.
-A new boardwalk and enclosure has been created: this links the door at the bottom of the red panda/leopard area, to the anteater enclosure, the boardwalk goes above the anteater enclosure, part of which has been netted over and is now shared with Golden Headed Lion Tamarins.
-Branching has been added to the green anaconda enclosure.

Waldrapp Ibis appear to have left the collection

The Ibis can currently be found in the enclosure opposite Sayan, the male Amur Leopard.

I have asked a couple of times in the past about whether a new female tiger will be joining the zoo, the main problem I have been told was finding a suitable home for the existing hybrid female, Anoushka.

News regarding the new lemur walkthrough from the zoo's Facebook page:

"Coming soon for Easter 2012 - Colchester Zoo's first lemur walkthrough exhibit, Lost Madagascar!

Development work is well underway on our very own litle piece of Madagascar right in the centre of the park, providing a unique and immersive experience and allowing you the chance to be closely surrounded by these charismatic, popular animals. Lemur species to be discovered in the exhbit will include red-bellied, crowned, blue-eyed black and red ruffed lemurs. Watch them leap around you as you stroll through their serene retreat..."

Good to know they are getting in a few new lemur species for the walkthrough as well.

I'm aware that lemur walk-through enclodures are common in zoos these days, but I'm excited by this and look foward to seeing this and the new lemur species.

A bit of news from the zoos website,
The Smooth Coated Otter pups born in May 2011 to mum, Chea and dad, Kong Kea have now all been named by their keepers as:

- Sok (male) which means “peaceful” in Cambodian
- Chanlina (female) meaning “moonlight”
- Kiri (female) meaning “mountain peak”
- Dara (female) meaning “star”

Also the last squirrel monkey baby of the season was born to experienced mother, Patsy on the 28th November 2011.

Other than that it seems to have gone quiet at the zoo...as i havent been able to visit the zoo in approx. 2 months due to work has anyone else got any updates??
