Common cranes have returned

Local ornitologists observed a pair of common crane with chicks in Dragomansko Blato this summer. First confirmed breeding event after a long time - the last time cranes bred in this marsch was in 1907 and averall it has been 66 years since last breeding seen anywhere in Bulgaria.

Dragomansko Blato is a swamp that is undergoing a process of rewilding after it was dried up in 20th century and turned into arable land. It is in western Bulgaria near Serbian border.

If cranes breed in interior Bulgaria they probably breed in few pairs in Serbia and Romania too - but I´m yet to find a source for it. Cranes are silently recolonising Balkan after complete extirpation.
