Common Zoo Exhibits

These grottos look like horrible exhibits. That has to be painful for the bears to stand, sit, and lay on.

I always knew Cincinnati had bad bear exhibits, but I didn't know they were that bad!

@arctic wolf- I don't see grassy gorilla exhibits with no climbing structures becoming 'the norm'. When I went to find another example of a bare gorilla enclosure, the only one I could find with absolutely no climbing structures was Topeka's (which based on the photo is argueably the worst ever). Certainly I've seen gorilla enclosures with little climbing structures but nothing as bad of Topeka's (especially Topeka's) and Philadelphia's.

The Hogle Zoo's gorilla enclosure is pretty hideous. The outdoor yard has little climbing structures and the indoor exhibit looks like a prison cell (It even has bars on the windows.) The orangutan exhibit is similar but at least they have a jungle gym outside.

I'm not saying that the exhibits have absolutely no climbing structures, just very few. I don't think they're becoming very common, but there are a bunch of exhibits like that. Another example I can think of is the outdoor gorilla exhibit at the Pittsburgh Zoo.

Another exhibit that is very common is the guanaco, vicuna, tapir, rhea, capybara, mara, anteater, and less commonly crested screamer, coscoroba swan and coypu exhibits that every european zoo seems to have.
