There is news that in October at least twelve asprete Romanichthys valsanicola, a fish related to perches, ruffes and darters, were found in the Valsan River of Romania. Official estimates have numbered the species at ten-fifteen individuals in total, which are thought to live along just 1km of the Valsan River. This is compared to 200 specimens found in the early 2000s.
An action plan for conserving the asprete, funded through the conservationists' own money and drafted by volunteers, recommends the ecological restoration of the Valsan River (threatened by damming, deforestation, illegal waste disposal and removal of rocks and gravel for construction purposes), hiring an around-the-clock warden, raising local awareness and, ultimately, creating a riverside conservation centre that will double up as a captive breeding facility for the species.
