Corsac Foxes

A question for you all.

Today I was at Hamerton and my Dad was talking to a member of staff about some of their more unusual species. This person claimed that 3 other UK collections keep Corsac Foxes besides Hamerton themselves; he thinks they said 2 in Scotland and 1 other (he thinks that Blackbrook may have been mentioned, but I'm dubious).

Now, I do know that Paradise Wildlife Park keeps this species, but does anyone know who else has them, if indeed this person is correct? Personally I think they're absolutely lovely animals and I'd love to see more of them in zoos, they're a very appealing exhibit and tend to show themselves pretty well too.

The Scottish collection the keeper was referring to would be the Galloway wildlife park.

No Corsacs at Blackbrook.

Zootierliste just lists Hamerton, Paradise and Galloway.

Corsac Foxes are also at Dartmoor I believe.

I think that was mentioned on here a while back, and it turned out they were actually Silver Foxes?

Thanks all for the info anyway, very interesting. Maguari, is the list you refer to available in the public domain, on the web for example? If so a link would be very much appreciated.

There's an option to toggle it to English. Very good site - it's user edited so as with any other user edited system can't be taken as necessarily complete or up-to-date but as a general rule I'd trust it over ISIS. Covers all of Europe in some detail and has far more weird little collections listed than ISIS, too!

Corsac Fox page is here:

Yeah they are silver foxes at Dartmoor.

Hamerton also claim to have the only collection of Jaguarudi's in the UK, they are wrong as Cotswold Wildlife park have at least 4.

I use zootierliste quite alot, there is the option to look for species and collections on whole.

Corsac foxes, whislt being charismatic and charming, do not have a conservation message that i feel needs to be delivered to the public. Because they lack a conservation message the collection should take measures to educate the public on the ecological role they forfill and perhaps taking into account other similar but endangered species :D (I'd love to see any small canine species become more common in uk zoos)

And I love your photo Dawn B

The examples at Cotswold actually came from Hamerton and they have bred at least twice there although they have lost some of the young. There are also examples at the RSCC in Sandwich but not sure if they are in any way related to the examples at Hamerton.

I think Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre have Corsac foxes when I last saw them two years ago.
Yes apparently there were upto 13 or so of them at the top of the hill. I was told this by the owner of Hamerton a few years back, never been lucky enough to see them there though. May have more luck next time if they are still there.

There are various threads on RSCC as it had been quite the focus on attention on zoochat, I also suggets you look on the gallery as there quite alot of heated debates about RSCC there. :D

Like Arctic foxes, they were used to be common in zoos, but the species are now left in two collections in UK!

I really want to be able to find a counter-example for Arctic Foxes as I'm sure it can't be that bad but I can only get Welsh Mountain and Highland.

I suspect there are dozens (hundreds?) in private hands, though.
