Cotingas in captivity

Following suit on a previous thread (Birds of Paradise in captivity), @GerbenElzinga and I have been working on a list for another family of wonderful passerines in captivity, namely Cotingidae.

A couple thoughts beforehand:
1) Because we had to draw the line somewhere, we decided to use no information older than 5 years (so only things posted from 2012 onwards) upon making this list; we did this to keep the list as accurate and up-to-date as possible.
2) To make this list we used information from zootierliste, zoochat, visits to the respective zoos, and occasionally other sources (facebook pages of the collections, visits of friends to the respective zoos, etc.)
3) There are bound to be many more parks in South and Central America keeping various cotinga species, but it is very hard to find a lot of information about them online.
4) Anyone is more than welcome to mention things that need to be altered/updated on this list!

@jayjds2 Are you sure about guianan red cotinga, three-wattled bellbird and screaming piha at DWA? I've seen all 3 mentioned online but never after 2012 so I decided against putting them on this list.

Odd (and sad, as it is my favorite of the family, and one of my favorite passerine species in general) how there are currently 4 male umbrellabirds in captivity but not a single female...

Either way, it looks like I should really get to DWA sooner rather than later... 11 species :O

Luckily for you the Dallas world aquarium renovated an exhibit and named it cotinga corner. That's where the wattled umbrella bird is exhibited, along with a lot of Guinean and Andean cock of the rocks and capuchin birds.
 
A few additions (unfortunately I don't have numbers)

Pyroderus scutatus are also kept in Sao Paulo Zoo, RioZoo and Passeio Publico (Curitiba), Brazil.

A group of Rupicola peruvianus are also held in the small school zoo of Colegio La Inmaculada in Lima, Peru.

Now that you mention it, you're right- the mention I saw was from 2011. However, a book I bought at the aquarium (which I can't find online) simply called The Dallas World Aquarium mentions both bellbird and Guianan red cotinga as species the aquarium is trying to breed. There isn't a publishing date (or any info of that sort) in the book either, but I bought it in 2014 or 2015. It is likely the aquarium still has both species, along with the piha.

A shame indeed. At least, if you get to DWA, they'll actually be on exhibit :P along with Guianan cotr. I saw the off exhibit area for them, but it was before I had a camera so I have one terrible phone photo (still kicking myself). Saw them in San Diego but I was in a rush and that aviary really isn't conducive to photography.
 
Gaiazoo does not have capuchin birds, that was an error, see the zoosite forum for more info...

@jayjds2 hmm, I think I'll refrain from adding them to the list until I have actual confirmation from a date after 2011, but in the meanwhile it's really good to know that it's likely the 2 lovely species are still around.

I had read that before but only the first half of the discussion, and I was somewhat skeptical about the one seemingly unknown person saying "zootierliste is wrong in this case," and then no explanation aftwerwards. I didn't realize at the time that said person was a curator at GaiaZoo. :p

Since you've visited so recently; were the scarlet Andean cock-of-the-rocks (R.p.sanguinolentus) still on-show? I recently found out DWA keeps those as well, so I'll have to edit those into my list!

On facebook I can't find any more info on the place indeed, but when I looked up "Berry Brothers Aviaries" on google I found a link to their facebook page with the description "Berry Brothers Aviaries, Naples, Italy. 2379 likes · 98 talking about this. Allevamento e ricerca di varie specie di Aves. Breeding and research of..."
Looking through their pictures I saw the question "are any of these for sale" quite often, which leads me to believe that it isn't your average public collection. I'm not sure if it's exclusively a private collection (2000+ likes on facebook seems very high for that), if it's a private collection with limited opening hours and that sells birds, or if it's just part of an exotic pet store (or maybe even a college?)

A private breeder in the UK produces a Spangled Cotinga or two every year.

Mondo Verde recently received 1,1 as well.
 
@FBBird do you know any more information of this breeder? And to everyone in general, what is the general consensus on me adding private keepers to this list? Should I, should I not?

@kiang indeed, sadly. Every country has their specialties, I suppose.

Also, I found out that Memphis keeps Purple-throated fruitcrows as well, so those will be added in the next update. :D
 
Cincinnati no longer keeps spangled cotinga, though nobody is quite sure what happened to their last individual.
