Does anyone know who or what smashed two of the windows inside Realm of the Red Ape? I would haved guessed it was strong glass or acrylic

I saw the glass had been smashed last weekend,if you look carefully you can see the point of impact, that caused it to crack, also its only cracked on the inside which means it was done on the Orangs side. The glass is special re-inforced multi layered glass,I was told what it is called but I have forgotten.

When I went in October 2010, I noticed at least 2 panes of glass were cracked so those windows were sectioned off.

I remember at Twycross that the Orangs would bring in stones from outside and bash the glass very hard with them.

They still do on occasion. There's a notice up asking us to snitch if we see them :D

It was quite a daft decision to concrete over the top of the glass in RotRA, which makes replacing it not only expensive but quite a major undertaking.

I am not saying it is the case here, but at my zoo on occasion a glass pane will break (usually the lion enclosure) because of extreme changes in temperature and the expanding glass is fit too tightly in the metal frame.

On another thread someone mentioned that the orangutans at the San Diego Zoo broke one of their panes and the zoo sold the shattered pane to someone as art for several thousand dollars. Now that is ingenious marketing!

I would imagine that when natural outdoor Orang enclosures are being prepared care is taken to avoid any stones being left around . On a visit to Dublin Zoo with an IZES group some time ago , their big male orang had managed to find a big stone somehow . The keepers were trying to bribe him to swap the stone for some of his favourite treats before he did any damage .

we were taught about the introduction of bartering systems between keepers and orangs at jersey zoo (possibly?), monday in a animal handling lecture... very interesting, especially that items like hats or badges dropped in the enclosure were worth a few grapes, however the orangs learnt to hold out for more dangerous items (bottles of glass cleaner) as the keepers were desperate to get them out of the enclosure quick so the orangs learnt they could get lots more grapes for it lol

led me to thinking though ''how clumsy are jersey zoo primate keepers?'' :D

Amy the orangutan at Monkey World is an expert at this, she gathers quite a crowd with her 'sparking the electric fence with a stick' activities, I suspect she gets some of her sticks supplied by naughty visitors which she then barters for something nice.
