DaLilFishie's Guide to the Marine Angelfishes (Pomacanthidae)

This family of colourful, deep-bodied reef fishes is found worldwide in shallow tropical reef habitats, although a few species inhabit mesophotic depths. They may easily be confused with their close relatives, the butterflyfishes (Chaetodontidae), but can be distinguished by the presence of large, rear-facing spines on the gill covers (typically one spine per gill cover, but some such as Centropyge bispinosa have two). They are not to be confused with the freshwater angelfishes of the genus Pterophyllum, which are unrelated.
For purposes of this thread, I will be using the classification scheme used by iNaturalist, which lists 90 species in 7 genera – the taxonomy of this family is far from resolved, and the number of genera and species varies by source. Many species and genera, especially Centropyge, appear to be non-monophyletic. Where applicable, I may include taxonomic notes.

Coral Beauty Centropyge bispinosa
Widespread Indo-Pacific distribution. This species is highly variable in the extent of it’s blue colouration and shade of orange markings, from almost fully blue individuals to almost entirely orange/cream, but typically somewhere in the middle. This variability may cause identification confusion, but the two (rather than one) spines per gill cover (the lower one much smaller than the other) will separate this species from all others.

Genus Genicanthus – 10 species, 7 in the ZooChat galleries

Ornate Angelfish Genicanthus bellus
Has a wide but patchy distribution in the western Pacific and eastern Indian Ocean. However, this patchiness may be an artifact of few fish surveys being conducted at the greater depths this species inhabits. Sexually dichromatic.

Awesome list, dude! Appreciate you for using some of my photos as well, that's really awesome to see.
Purplemask Angelfish Centropyge venusta
This one is crazy to me that there's no individual photos of it on here, seeing how somewhat common they show up in the Aquarium hobby (at least in the US). I didn't realize how few Aquariums kept them. I know Steinhart / California Academy of Sciences has 1 (or did, not sure about post-renovation of their Twilight Zone gallery but I'd imagine they still have it), so that'll be on my "must photograph list" for when I go down next month.

Emperor Angelfish Pomacanthus imperator
Widespread in the Indo-Pacific. Vagrant to Hawaii, and has established in the Mediterranean as a Lessepsian migrant. Has been recorded in Puerto Rico and Florida as aquarium releases. Two distinct forms – one in the Pacific and one in the Indian Ocean, which have been suggested to be subspecifically distinct. Pacific form has a extended filament on the soft dorsal fin and a yellow caudal fin, Indian Ocean form has no filament and often an orangish caudal fin. However, Pacific specimens from some sites lack the dorsal filament.

Narcosis Angelfish Centropyge narcosis
Endemic to the Cook Islands. A deepwater species found at depths of below 100 metres, hence the species name.
At least for the Narcosis, last I heard there are only 6 individuals in captivity and I'm pretty sure they're all privately owned (at least 3 of them are). I do know of one person in Australia who owns 1 of them since his friend was actually the previous owner, then gifted it to him when leaving the aquarium hobby, what a crazy way to get a fish like that.
I would love to go to Andrew Sandler's house one day in New York to knock some of these off my bucketlist like the Narcosis since he's got a pair.
Centropyge colini annd Centropyge joculator are rare but not excessively rare
agreed, both were / are being captive bred time to time as well, but their price tag is still high so I get why a ton of people don't have them. WIsh they would be in some more public aquariums. Same with Holacanthus africanus.
Blackspot Angelfish Centropyge nigriocellus
Patchily distributed in the Pacific Ocean.
I've heard this species has only entered the trade once, and it was only a single or 2 of them. Mainly because they're so reclusive in nature, no one makes an effort to collect them. Don't think we'll get any pics unfortunately.

Resplendent Angelfish Centropyge resplendens
Endemic to Ascension Island.
This predates my time but I heard in the early 2000's or 2010's, someone was actually breeding Resplendent's and there were a couple that sold in the trade, there's gotta be some around hopefully in someone's tank. They're not collected from the wild at all

Yep, it's an extremely cryptic species, basically never leaving the reef structure. Even divers never see them, they're pretty much only recorded when fish poisons are used to sample cryptic fishes.
