If Dallas is doing this with Giants, hopefully Birmingham follows with its sister exhibit. They did that last summer with 7 closing times but also the talk when Trails opened was for "night safaris" with "simulated" moonlight. I'm not sure what that is exactly.
 
Dallas Zoo's Safari Nights - Summer 2013

The Dallas Zoo will host "Safari Nights" on Saturdays, June 8 through July 27, 2013. The Zoo will stay open until 9 p.m. each of these eight evenings. Live music will add to the evening ambiance. Regular Zoo admission rates will apply.
 
When I first posted this notice (about Saturday nights), I thought it just said the zoo would be open late. But now I see it says it is open for evening concerts and seems to imply that exhibit areas will not be open? Not sure, but that is how the new wording looks. If so, this is not so great after all. Plus almost all of the bands lined up are tribute bands! :rolleyes:
 
Safari Nights at the Dallas Zoo

Thank you for your discussion on the upcoming Safari Nights series at the Dallas Zoo. Here is the evening's schedule for Safari Nights (Saturdays beginning June 8 through July 27; regular Zoo hours - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.):

- 5 p.m. - Lion Keeper Encounter
- 5 to 8 p.m. - Wild Encounters Stage animal presentations
- 5:30 p.m. - Chimp Keeper Encounter
- 6 p.m. - SOAR, A Festival of Flight bird show
- 6:30 p.m. - Galapagos Tortoise Keeper Encounter (tentative)
- 7 p.m. - live music begins
- 8 p.m. - Gorilla Trail, Koala Walkabout/Lorikeet Landing, Primate Place, Birds Landing, Camel Rides, ExxonMobil Endangered Tiger Habitat, Lacerte Family Children's Zoo, and Giraffe Feeding close
- 9 p.m. - Zoo closes

Will be open the entire evening (until 9 p.m.):
- Giants of the Savanna (elephants)
- Herpetarium
- Wings of Wonder
- Texas Cats
- Lemur Lookout
- Penguin Cove
- Safari Express Train
- Endangered Species Carousel
- Zoofari Market

Monorail Safari will NOT be running past 5 p.m. each evening.

Food, cold beer, and wine will be available for purchase.
 
Good to hear all of the animal exhibits are open late (until either 8 or 9pm). Several of my zoos here in Arizona do similar things - they are extremely popular - and I hope this becomes a well attended yearly tradition at Dallas.
 
Does anyone know if the zoo still has Arabian Goitered gazelles,nubian ibex and Secretary Bird?

Yes, the Dallas Zoo currently has Nubian ibex and secretary birds, both of which can be found on the Monorail Safari tour. We do not have the goitered referenced, however.
 
A okapi is slated to give birth with in the next week.

The zoo will start mixing yellow back duiker with the Okapi with in the next week.

A secretary bird is now on display in the WOA monorail grassland habitat. Two young male warthogs (born at the zoo) are now in the former gerenuk habitat.
 
The article says they are building a cheetah run for them, which is fantastic. Dallas is already one of my favorite zoos (and the best zoo in the Southwest) and this will make it even better.

Just for clarification, they are from the SMITHSONIAN Conservation Biology Institute, the off site research center for the National Zoo. They are not from this Conservation Biology Institute: Conservation Biology Institute
 
Sorry about that mistake. I was being lazy and copied and pasted and failed to notice I missed smithsonian. Whoops. Sorry for any confusion.
 
Poor Patrick. I vaguely remember him from his time in Toronto. He's had a rough life. First being rejected by his mother. Being moved to Toronto to be raised with Jabari and Jomo. Being moved to Dallas where Jabari, the only one he got along with, is eventually killed. No wonder hes a little messed up. Hopefully he will take a liking to the other bachelors at Riverbanks Zoo and can have friends. Hes had to live a lonely life since Jabari died. Its a pity he couldnt make it as a troop leader and father. His father's wild born status would have to make him a fairly high priority to breed.
