Dallas Zoo Dallas Zoo News 2022

The zoo announced today via its socials that the generic giraffe calf born earlier this fall has been named “Nea”, meaning “Radiant” in Swahili, and has been introduced to every member of the herd, including her father, “Tebogo”. Apparently, this is the first time in the zoo’s history that a male giraffe has been exhibited with its offspring.

Visited this zoo for the first time yesterday and indeed the Maned Wolf habitat is still under construction as @Kudu21 noted awhile back. It is funny to me they have them on the map yet no signage for the species near the exhibit at the moment either.

Also, the changes to the Herpetarium must be completed or like 95% completed as all the signs were consistent and only about 5 or 6 small terrariums were not occupied or covered over. Again, I’ve not been here before, but if I wasn’t aware some changes were happening, I couldn’t have told the difference anything really changed. I was super impressed by the building and loved seeing an active Tuatara.

Personally, I think something cool to put in the former monorail space would be black or white rhinoceros. Considering Dallas has one of the best collections of African fauna out there, African rhinos are a somewhat odd omission that could be fixed

ZIMS alone lists 30.48.1 at 18 institutions in the United States, which is nothing to shake a stick at. The final Dallas animal was moved into a breeding situation. I admittedly do not know a whole lot about the primate programs in the AZA; however, I do believe that I have heard that there is a push in some Old World programs to consolidate breeding individuals into bigger groups at fewer institutions (similar to many ungulate programs).

Time to play guess the animal.

Dallas just sent out an email for wrapping up 2022 and at the bottom it says “Coming soon in 2023; Listen and take a guess!” And there is this link to an audio file.

that’s it, no other clues or information given.

So, what is it?

They've been mentioned several times in here, the exhibit just isn't open.
