Chester Zoo Death of Strolch.

I've only just read that 'Strolch' had to be put down. Very Sad. As far as getting a new male- I believe our Belfast contact 'Al' told us they have a home-bred 12 year old male who is surplus and looking for a home. If he's not at all related to the Chester female, its only a short hop from Belfast to Chester.;)

Alternatively, Basel, Lyon & Pontscorff Zoos are all currently listed as having 2.0 bears each...

That is so sad:( We were at the zoo yesterday, and saw the female, but presumed the male was out of sight somewhere. Let's hope they get a suitable male in soon!
 
Very sad news - R.I.P. Strolch. :(

I really hope that this setback will be overcome and that Chester get another male Spectacled Bear and achieve breeding success at last. I want to see this species do well in the UK, but now we are back to pinning all our hopes on South Lakes again!
 
It shouldn't be too difficult to replace him- there's a spare male at Belfast- or possibly others in Europe (see above).

He was a great bear, I met him on keeper for a day and he was very tolerant of me, the keepers, Loja and even the coatis. He will be missed...
 
Why did 'Strolch' have to be put down? It says on the other thread' due to an eye infection' but were there some sort of complications e.g. was it untreatable/cancerous?
 
Whilst doinga web-search this morning I came across an interview with Tim Rowlands in the 'Chester Chronicle' dated 12.9.2008 . He had recently been to Zurich to see a male spectacled bear which they hoped to import later .
 
That's good, hope they do :)

There is a lot of work being done by Tim (and no doubt the other managers) to pair up single specimes, either by bringing something in to Chester or sending the Chester animal to another collection.

There does seem to be some movement that is needed in the zoo recently or planned movements.
