Twycross Zoo Dhole questions

I am doing an assignment on the Dhole enclosure at Twycross for my behavioural management assignment at university.

Can anyone tell me accurately the age and sex of the Dhole at Twycross, where they are from, and if they are related?

Thanks
Meg

I think you'd really be best to contact the zoo - they're the only ones who could be definitive on this. Besides, if it's for Uni, you'll need to give a reference for that kind of information, and I'm not sure they'd really take Zoochat as valid! :)

Also I persume you would have to have Twycross zoo permission to do a study on their enclosure?

I am sure there was an article about twycross Dholes in the last RATEL (ABWAK) if you can locate that? As mentioned , contacting the zoo is favourite.

Thanks everyone - I was going to contact the zoo - but thought I would ask so I something to be working with while I waited for a reply!

I cant back it up as i havent visited Twycross and havent visited the United kingdom for many year , but i think the twycros dholes might have came from the Howletts breeding programne as surplus animals , im pretty sure i once read a link about that , but i dont fully remember

Twycross currently keep 2.3 in a none breeding group, and I believe Jose as correct when he says the founders of the group gane from Howletts.

I think that source is correct too- they were the only other UK collection with Dhole before Twycross acquired theirs.

The group have bred once at Twycross, I think 1.1 came from Howletts originally, 8 or 9 years ago. I think they replaced cheetahs.

I'm sure there was 3 or 4 the first time i saw them. I've always thought their enclosure wasn't the greatest in all honesty but it does provide them with areas to hide as they seem quite nervous animals. The enclosures for the Dholes, Lions and Leopards all seem pretty similar (esp the dhole and lion cages) almost like Twycross have a default set up for its carnivores

I was lucky to see the dholes really active on my last visit (went round to them about 4 o'clock - seems to be the 'magic' time). I snuck down really quietly as they seemed very wary of people.

I know what you mean about the enclosure they are currently in, but when I was there (end of aug I think) there was a model in the education centre (near the elephants) showing plans for new enclosures for the asiatic lions and the for the Dholes.

These will be behind the elephant enclosure (and presumably started after this is completed). They will be much larger with a more modern 'open' front. (Sorry not sure of the technical terms for these types of enclosures).

The threads about the move of the lionesses from Twycross to Dudley give the impression this enclosure won't be built for a while yet. Its a step in the right direction though i think :)
