De Zonnegloed Sanctuary Dierenpark De Zonnegloed

5 rescued Anubis baboons came from Stichting AAP in the Netherlands. Here the confistigated animals were carefully brought together to form a group which took several years !
Now the group is brought to De Zonnegloed were they are housed in a complete newly construced enclosure which was build with the financial help of Stichting AAP.
 
The Zonnegloed has completed their exhitits for the birds of prey, and they are building several facilitys for big cats (lions, tigers, ...) now. Due to covid the the work is temporarily stopped. At this moment they use the exhibit for bisons and barbary sheeps.In attachment some pictures from constructions for the big-cats.


Water buffalo's and prairidogs are announced to arrive later this year.

Completely unexpectedly, three brown bears have been born at Dierenpark de Zonnegloed. Mother of the cubs is Sandra. She came with her brother Tishka from a Ukrainian zoo six months ago. He cannot be the father as he has been castrated. So Sandra must have already been pregnant in Ukraine. Sandra was supposed to have surgery on her teeth next week, but that operation is now postponed.

Deze drie berberapen, een bedreigde diersoort, hebben eindelijk hun veilige thuis gevonden in ons dierenopvangcentrum in Vleteren. Quart heeft een donkere vacht en een gezicht vol sproeten. Deze overlever, ooit zwervend gevonden in Spanje, werd in 2022 de kalme leider van de groep. Aziza werd verlaten door haar vorige eigenaar in Duitsland voordat ze in 2013 bij Stichting AAP aankwam. Na een moeilijke start heeft ze haar plek gevonden als sterke leider van de groep. Met haar donkere vacht en lange gezicht is ze een onmisbare kracht binnen het trio. Capsien, de jongste van het trio, heeft een lichte vacht en een wit gezicht met donkere vlekken. Na een redding in Frankrijk vond ze in 2022 haar plek in de groep, waar ze als dappere en zachtaardige aap haar eigen ruimte heeft veroverd. Quart, een ervaren leider met een bewogen verleden, Aziza, het sterke alfavrouwtje, en Capsien, de jonge overlever, zijn nu onderdeel van onze familie. When visiting de Zonnegloed yesterday, we saw works on multiple enclosures. It seems the capibara enclosure and the otter enclosure are getting an update, as well as the olive baboons. The latter especially seem to be getting a big upgrade (according to the signing, I've never been there before. :) ) The baboons are currently at Stichting AAP where they are being introduced with other Olive baboons. The full group is coming back to de Zonnegloed if everything goes according to plan.
 
 
 
The Zonnegloed provides shelter for exotic wild animals. It is therefore not a real zoo, but rather a sanctuary.The need for shelter is great and has increased significantly in recent years. Driven by the desire to help as many animals as possible, the sanctuary took in more and more animals.

As a result, Zonnegloed has grown much faster than expected in recent years. So much so that the non-profit organisation now shelters more animals than is legally permitted. And despite having safe and sufficiently large enclosures, these are not always licensed.

This is where the problem lies, and regularisation is needed. The sanctuary must therefore temporarily adjust its operations and reduce the number of animals in order to ensure and strengthen the future care of wild animals. Fellow animal shelters will help Zonnegloed in this endeavour...

How realistic would it be that Zonnegloed get a proper "zoo"-licence?

This set me off really!!! Where I do know there is regular animal trade in other smaller wild animal species ..., the notion of zebra in regular animal trade and in particular a rather strict transparancy/accountability judicial / legal framework Scandinavian country and for good reason like Sweden zebra would be so freely traded.

Somehow, I cannot think that the origins of these zebras would be UNBEKNOWEST to the Swedish authorities and that in the export countries like Denmark and Germany had no problems at their borders with the paperwork for the zebras going to a Polish zoo!!! I do think it is more an example of a legal wrangle within Poland and where the Polish border authorities are in some way ... at fault themselves.

I do know this may be considered a serious accusative matter, but I would like to single it out here as the issue within Europe(an) region regularly remains a situation that most AND each and every country maintaining separate border controls and/or dreaming up revised legislation and regulations after finishing up the paperwork (and for good matter updating them again and changing them again ...) that does not correspond with other members within the Community (and ... honestly ... this is a phenomenon that pre-exists pretty much in all and does unnecessarily make imports/exports of wild (and exotic wild) animal species a nightmare compared to the BS lax enforcement held with livestock and pets....!

Thanks for your comments! Hope they can sort out the challenges with expansion and stuff then!

The query re the confiscation / import at Poland border still stands ... unaddressed!

Please note that in the absence of a clear legal law for exotic animal shelters, they currently have a zoo licence.

However, the owner has indicated that they are in discussion with the current minister to move away from this licence (and responsibilities) and to look for a suitable (and perhaps easier to implement) licence as a shelter.
