Dierenpark Zie-ZOO Dierenpark Zie-ZOO news 2023

I just watched a video of the zoo (youtube-zoo eindruck). It has been on my "to visit" list for some time. When does the Mountain animal exhibit open ? Finaly snowleopards in the Netherlands

We already have snow leopards in the Netherlands. Dierenpark Hoenderdaell has had them since last year.
I didn't know that. I was at Landgoed Hoenderdaell just a few months prior to the arrival of the snowleopards. The exhibit doesn't look much tailord to snowleopards though. I'm more excited for Zie-zoo's

Later this year at the earliest, but it could also very well be next year, as indicated by a new map published recently (the date on the website is not correct though). If you click on the left map at the link below you can zoom in on the image.

This new map also lists the species for the new mountain area: kea, hyrax (presumably the yellow-spotted bus hyrax they have), bearded vulture, snow leopard and Rocky Mountain goat. Immediately adjacent to the mountain area will be an exhibit for what I think, based on the drawing, will be European sousliks. This map also mentions a new marabou/vulture aviary where the Rocky Mountain goats now live.

I visited Zie-Zoo for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and yes, the exhibit for European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus) is already finished and they are signed, but I didn't see any. There is also a big sign for the planned vulture aviary at the rocky mountain goat exhibit, unfortunately I don't remember which species are shown there, except for the already present White-backed vulture.

It will also include Black kites, Eurasian griffon vultures and Marabou storks, among others

I shared it in the 2022 thread (last post in the thread)

Visited Zie-Zoo again today, and I was happy to see two new species!

- The European ground squirrels (sousliks) have arrived. I saw 5 but there might be more.
- Finally, there are African wild dogs on show! Three females came from Sweden. The EAZA membership surely has helped speed up the process :)

Am I right in thinking the jackals got replaced by the African wild dogs?
(Just a guess)

I keep seeing pictures of jackals even from in April, and we went May 30th, but there was no sign of them.

We absolutely loved this place.
Next time we're on holiday in Belgium again, we will definately go here again.

No, the jackals are to my knowledge still in the exhibit next to the parking lot, while the African wild dogs are kept next to the hyenas at the back of the zoo.

The jackals are not signed as I believe they are technically private property of Zie-Zoo's owner, but they can be seen from a small area next to the main and entrance building.

I visited a few weeks ago for the third time and I have always had a good time at Zie-Zoo also. But I haven't yet seen the jackals.

I've seen the jackals on every visit since they've been located in their current enclosure. You must be very unlucky then.

You can usually easily spot them if you're looking into the enclosure from the front right side (with you back facing the road, you will have to stand very close to the marmot enclosure)

Oh, we didn't see that bit at all then :(
I figured since the African dogs were quite new in the enclosure.

Thanks for explaining! Hopefully next year :)

I only watched the jackal exhibit from the parking lot and didn't go towards the marmot exhibit during my last two visits. That could well be the mistake I made resulting in not seeing the jackals.

I visited on May 31st and I believe the African only wild dogs had only arrived a couple weeks before that.

We missed each other by a day, hehe.

Yes, we got talking to someone, who was clearly an African wild dog follower, who told us that they had only been there for a short time and where they came from.

And I kept seeing pictures of the jackals from before May, so I thought they could have been replaced with the wild dogs, as we didn't see the jackals anywhere.

But now we know why (y).

We'll be going back to Belgium next April/May, and are already definite we wanna go back here, so hopefully they'll still be there then.

I visited the park in early April for the first time and did see the jackals right when I arrived. When I left later on, I didn't see them anymore. However, I only paid attention to the exhibit because I read about it on here, so thanks for that and for the tip about the marmot enclosure, I only looked from the parking lot...
