Dingoes in Overseas Zoos

I live with three dogs, A great Dane x, A Ridgeback x which belong to my housemate and I own a purebred tropical Dingo.

Narra (The dingo) was born in a zoo in South Australia. She very much has all of her natural insticts and although she loves to play with the other two she is very very different.

Watching her today got me thinking:
Are dingoes popular animals in overseas zoo?
Are there many Zoos that exhibit them?
How are they exhibited?
 
Not common animals in European zoos at all these days - for a long time the only one I'd seen was at the old Suffolk Wildlife Park (now 'Africa Alive!'), until Hodonin in 2003. There are none in the UK that I'm aware of.

I know Tierpark Berlin have them, and I saw them at Neunkirchen last year. They tend to be in smaller, less-well known collections - Berlin is the only 'big' zoo I know of to have them.

I spose with things like Jackals available Dingoes wouldnt be all that interesting. But still a good part of an Australian Exhibit and exporting woudl be easy depending on the state.

I know of one Dingo Farm/Sanctuary getting a bit out with the rest of the dingo crowd for exporting.

Then theres the ones that were imported from Romania or Bulgaria via Holland late last year, Back home to Australia!
 
I'd never been overly interested in them at a zoo, but after watching the way she plays, I think a pack would make an awesome exhibit, especially as pups. $2,000 of training and 12 months later she's finally starting to come good Ben. ;)
 
She was great as a little pup. It was once we let her outside and she saw the chooks run that she went feral.

It's more a case of wolves and foxes than jackals, I think. Jackals are also pretty scarce.



Just had a quick Zootierliste check - it lists 20 European zoos with Australian Dingoes and 3 with New Guinea Singing Dogs.

Jackal-wise:

Black-backed - 11 zoos
Golden Jackal (European ssp.) - 10 zoos
Golden Jackal (generic/unknown ssp.) - 3 zoos
Golden Jackal (Middle East ssp.) - 2 zoos
Golden Jackal (Syrian ssp.) - 6 zoos - all in Israel


That's actually more Dingoes and Goldens than I thought, but compared to 172 zoos listed with European Wolves or 122 with European Red Foxes still pretty scarce!
 
I saw two dingoes at the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo in Indiana in the summer of 2010, and I'm fairly certain that they are the only two of their kind in any North American public zoo. However, I've heard reports of 1-2 establishments with privately owned dingoes in the United States and there are several American zoos with New Guinea singing dogs.
 
And do not forget the collections that as well have African Wild Dogs, Dholes or Maned Wolfs. All species that are quite widely available in European zoos and "compete" with dingo's and New Guinea Singing Dogs.

True. African Wild Dogs in particular have been getting much more common these last few years.
 
Kuwait had a pair of dingos two years ago, don't know if they still have them.

Need Location Help

Here I am again still looking for New Guinea Singing Dogs.
I understand there may be some in The Netherlands.
Could anyway shed light on this rumor?
Are there private individuals who have NGSD in The Netherlands?
How would a person find out?

As far as i am aware, there are no NGSD in Dutch public or semi-public Zoos. The only dingo's I know of are animals that were at "Zie-Zoo" (in Volkel) and Stichting AAP (a primate rescue center).

Zie-Zoo is a small Zoo run by volunteers and because they don't have a full zoo license, they are only allowed to open for the public for a few days a year. Stichting AAP is one of the largest primate rescue centers in Europe, which also takes care of some other animals in need.

I believe both only held Dingo's and for a relatively short period. At least some of these animals were born at Luxembourgs - Parc Merveilleux (Bettembourg). As far as I know the AAP animals where placed at a small Zoo/Wildpark in Germany. If you'd like more information about any animals I can try and gather some more.

I have no idea about NGSD at private keepers in the Netherlands, perhaps others can help shed more light on that...
 
There are dingos in private hands in Netherlands, but I haven't heard of anyone keeping NGSD.
 
Not in the Netherlands but NGSD's are now held at Exmoor Zoo, UK (1:1) and Zoo Zlin, Czech Republic since March 2011 (1:1, offspring of the Exmoor pair although they were born at RSCC, UK)
 
Zie-Zoo has informed me that they don't hold, and never held, dingo's. Must have mixed them up with something else...?

At least i'm pretty sure AAP had a few in their rescue center...
 
I know two people in the uk keeping dingoes privatly. They are both quite young and was told the are uk bred but previous to this I didn't think any were in the uk?

Oldsinger, we have some NGSDs up here in the Kansas City Zoo, not too far from you. A male and female, named Blues and Jazz. They've been with us for a couple years and are great, fun animals.
