Dixie State University has a hidden gem in its biology department that will soon be open to the public for tours: a Natural Science Museum.
The museum goes back to 1917 at what was then called the St. George Academy, said Bryan Stevens, the curator of the museum. The museum was in a closet that was later moved over to what became Dixie College and was taken over by Andrew Barnum, a graduate of the school.
“He was interested in life science and nature and everything like that. He knew of the very small collection at the time and then he left, got his Ph.D., and came back in '59 and started teaching,” Stevens said.
