Visting Longleat for the first time next weekend. If you want me to find anything out please post it here and I will see what I can do. I will be asking what is happening with monkey jungle as to whether it will ever reopen. We will be back late on sunday evening so I will post my findings late monday afternoon.

If you can, see whether they are going to get a new breeding male for the 'B' pride, which is the largest pride.

Also, any info regarding a male amur tiger to join the females?

Hope you have a good time, i go there in 3 weeks with my work :)

You could start by briefing us who the new female white rhinos are at Longleat ... and then tell us what the current or future breeding plans are (or whether this has already come to pass)?

Could you ask whether they are going to stay with a herd of only three zebra as before they used to have a heard of 5 or 6.

could you let us know where exactly the nyala are being kept and whether thr warthogs have now been intorduced into the east african reserve. any information on the current monkey situation and 'animal adventure' would also be much appreciated.
thanks.

Do you mean the 2 imported from South Africa about 5 or 6 years ago? I wasn't aware they had got more in. If you do mean those 2 they are Mrashi and Rzeena (Not sure if those are the correct spellings) and the park has been trying to get them to breed for the last couple of years but so far without success.

I have a feeling PaulKarli08 are they waiting for the 2 younger males to become mature enough?
Maybe they may have to stop breeding for a while they have had loads of cubs while Kabir was there, maybe a few years of no breeding could help the pride stay at a confortable number. While also waiting for the females to become mature then they could swap males with another pride?, Or even put the males in with Charlies Pride when he dies in the next 5 or so years.
African Lions are being bred very well at the moment with cubs at Linton,Knowlsey,Blair Drummoned (I think), Africa Alive!,West Mids and Paradise (White though), and ones at Woburn and Longleat having been born in the last 2 years or so a break of breeding in the larger prides could be in order otherwise there are going to be groups of unwanted surplus lions in the UK, Which is something that will not be needed!
Regards

Yes, the 2 young cows imported from S.Africa indeed. What ages are both cows right now? From my own records, they were imported either end 2005 or early 2006 (3+?)?

If I am correct they also brought in a new male ex S. Africa at the same time. Correct? If so, what is his local ID?

For breedings sake: I have very little confidence the old adult male Winston will breed again at 40 (wild born in 1969)? Is probably more content to sleep out and in, than hold a territory and breed with both females!

The only direct option would be to perform AI, but then the cows would really have to be sexually mature and cycling (I have no direct data on this).

Leaves a few questions open still ...

Yes a young bull named Unjarnu came with the girl's when they arrived from South Africa in 2003/2004. At the time they were not sexually mature although I don't know there exact ages. The plan was to put one of the girls with Winston and the other with Unjarnu. This was attempted and as far as I know it has so far not been a success so far. AI was attempted on two female's at the WMSP using sperm from Winston unfortunatly it failed as far as I know has not been tried again. The vet declared Winston as still able to father a calf despite his age as early as 2 years ago. So it's not impossible. I don't know the exact ages of the two cows sorry but I think they are both under 10 years old.

Hi stripes, thanks for asking, when you go could you find out please, now that both the flamingo and vulture aviaries have been in operation for a few years now, is there any sign of breeding from the birds in each aviary?
And of course see if you can find what new species or plans for the collection there are?

The collection at Longleat seems to be getting stronger and stronger with the arrival of nyala, warthog, Amur tiger and Siberian weasel amongst others.
I would like to see a more distinct geographical mixing policy in the main reserves, especially when it comes to the African animals, and a few more species of African antelope for good measure too.
And bring back the eles!

I have just returned from a week's stay at Longleat (on the caravan site!).

A few points from the place which may be of interest.

Animal Adventure looks far from complete - being worked on each day though but doesn't look ready for the impending summer holidays. (A poster for the 'AA' has an anteater on it).

Currently have 4 zebra: think it said 1 new male (called Guiness from Ireland), and 1 new female - both arrived this year.

They have a new male giraffe- a keeper at the African lookout area told me he was 10years old? and arrived this year - I can't remember what he said it was called though. And Jolly the old female did die last year.

No female ostriches - Trevor the male is still present but in the Rhino area.

3 rhino's only - 2 together and 1 female separate - there was a info. note up about them being seperate because of breeding I think? Winston has died?

Monkey area is closed still - oddly there is one Bactrian camel in the monkey jungle. The water buffalo are in the rhino area.

2 porcupine now inhabit the ferret enclosure in pet's corner, and the ferrets are in the old owl area. 2 Yellow mongoose in the old degu enclosure and the degu are in with the chinchillas.

Quite a lot of babies - oryx, eland, camel, 3 sealions, meerkats, and lots of deer.

Stripes. For your info, keep a lookout for a keeper in the African lookout area, one usually stands there who will answer questions.

The porcupines are moving into AA according to an e-mail I got, as would be likely for the mongooses. Interesting to hear anteaters will feature, they're certainly spreading.
Monkey Jungle's closed indefinately, I doubt it will re-open in the 2009 season. In fact, I wouldn't be suprised if they give up on rhesus' due to the virus, as other zoos and safari parks have done before.

Kiang, the sacred ibis' bred last year, in fact they're nest was in direct view of the cars. And here here on the eles!

skoop102 -Does this mean there is a baby rhino on the way? Sorry but I am too imapatient to wait to next weekend!

Deadline for question's is 7:00 friday night as we leave very early on Sataurday morning. Thanks

That would be nice but I am not sure - the lone rhino was out in the enclosure, whilst the other 2 were in the holding pen. I would have thought it would have been the other way around if pregnant?

I'm surprised that they didn't mention about Jolly on their website. I gather she was quite an old giraffe?

Prehaps the female in the paddock is pregnant and the park are keeping quiet and the female in the pen was in with the bull. I will try and get infomation from staff at the weekend.

Can we not speculate? Longleat has tried keeping just two together in hope that it would start some breeding (all signs were hopefully but then they went of the boil). The other female was then tried with Winston.

when i went to Longleat last october i was told by one of the keepers that they suspected resina was pregnant after several matings several months before with unjanu. It was murashi that was paired with winston. :)

Thats really good that they have a new male giraffe, hopefully a few calves next yr! Shame about Jolly though, i am also suprised that they never posted this on their website.

I am very shocked about there being no female ostriches. Has Honey died?
Does anybody know anythink about the camel being in the monkey enclosure and who are the moms to the baby sealions?

thanks
josh.
