I think these are the first pictures I've seen of the damage dolphins can do to one another...

Dancing with Dolphins in the wild

Scroll down to Droopy beat up by the gang section further on the page...I had no idea dolphins were capable of inflicting that much damage!

Never seen anything like it.

The fact that he has a friend that hangs with him. Really seems to humaise the whole story. poor thing wondering why it happened? The loss of the dominant male?

thanks for the link. Yes dolphins can do such damage to each other. Especially for position within the group or sexual behaviour.

The photos are a clear indication of what happens to a dolphins when they fight.

It was a HUGE shock for me seeing those photos...I know we tend to get "dolphins are cute and friendly and wouldn't hurt a fly" image a lot...but even this was beyond anything I'd ever imagined! Thanks for the comments :)

I personally knew before hand that Dolphins could be extremly aggressive, after a Hunter Hunted episode.
But these photos are a very grim sight, poor guy, shocked at the amount of damage.

yes they do look bad the bite marks but dolphins heal relatively quickly. The main concern is the stress level on that affected individual as this will lead to a potential weak immune system caused by social stress. The bite marks seen in the photos dont look too deep. Usually on a dolphin a serious wound is considered when the wound is beyong the fat layer exposing the muscle.

The strands on the tail that can be seen are fibres that are actually going through the healing process to close of the damage. That can be considered as a good sign.

I would imagine a few scenarios that could have caused that ammount of damage.

If that individual was a female it might have been caused by a male for sexual activity (and she wasnt receptive) or a gang rape ( multiple males organized attack on a female occasionally reported).

Social organized bullying in different scales within the social structer of the pod. Taking down with sheer force any potential aspiring dominant member.

Dolphins have been know also to attack or kill their own member of the group for no reason. This also happens with other species of animals.

Generally they are curious playfull animals so it doesnt mean that by seeing these photos everybody should be scared of them but as with any other species of animal care should be taken as they are still wild animals.

They cant be considerd as a highly aggressive species of animals if compared with other species.

I forgot to mention that if you see photos of dolphins most of them have bite marks on them.

They are social animals and they cause such marks also during play. If you have a look on the internet will will see that a lot of photos of dolphins have such marks on thier body.

Usually the animal that has the least marks can be considered as a dominant individual. By looking at the marks you can do an educated guess.

,, hmmm. yeah I remember seeing a documentery about how Dolphins can split into bachelor groups, because most don't become fathers until around 20 but become sexually mature at around 10.

So they kidnap females from pods. Or they so their courtship to several other animals, common dolphins and even turtles have been reported to be on the other end of dolphins!

yes .

They cant be considerd as a highly aggressive species of animals if compared with other species.

If you compare them with humans, chimps and trained pitbulls, maybe; otherwise one should not forget that dolphins are wild animals and that especially male bottlenose dolphins display behaviour that could indeed be called highly aggressive- even from our human point of view:
Killer dolphins baffle marine experts - Telegraph

I forgot exactly where, but I remember reading or watching not sure about a notorious aggressive dolphin named begger.

I saw a show about a certain bottlenose dolphin pod that was followed. (The type of show I don't usually like because they give all the dolphins names and try to humanise the story.) It showed how when these bottlenose dolphins met some spotted dolphins the males killed all the spotted dolphin males and raped the females until the females died of exhaustian but left the baby spotted dolphin untouched but the baby died too 'cos it couldn't get milk.
