Dudley Zoological Gardens Dudley Zoo News 2023

I remember Spotted Hyenas in what is now the Bush Dog enclosure, between the "Small Cats" range, Tiger enclosure and the Snow Leopards. I also remember talking to a member of staff who told me that the hyenas, (then quite elderly), had escaped when vandals cut their wire mesh fencing during the night. Keepers/ security staff managed to return one of the pair to the enclosure but the other, heading downhill towards the perimeter fence, had to be shot to prevent it escaping the site into Dudley town centre. I don't remember when this was, but sometime in the nineties.
In what is now the Bush Dogs enclosure, was in the early 1990s, home to Maned Wolves. The Hyenas certainly seems to have been moved around a bit.

I don't remember ever seeing a Maned wolf in captivity (even at places like Banham or Paignton which both hold the species), yet I saw word that YWP sent one of their females over to Drayton Manor Zoo.

Would love if these made a comeback to Dudley or other large zoos throughout Britain.
