A grant of £637,000 has been awarded by the Scottish rural development programme, to a group of enthusiastic professionals to open up a 34 acre site in the Scottish borders for a bird of prey conservation centre, at the heart of which will be (they claim) Europes largest free flight aviary at 80m wide and 30m high, for a group of around 50 large African vultures.
The 34-acre site would have space for 250 eagles, owls and other birds of prey in 100 enclosures.

Very interesting .

I was not aware that there were any Bearded Vultures in the UK , let alone the only breeding pair being here in Wales .

I am aware of the Falcon breeding centre run by Nick Fox outside Carmarthen - see Falcons - one of the world's largest facilities , but do not think they have other birds . Anyone know where the Bearded Vultures are ?

That is an interesting development for several reasons..... I didnt think grants were still being handed out considering the economic climate at the moment! I would imagine they could do quite a lot with the 650,000 that they have so I wonder why they dont make a start them complete the project at a later stage. It is very interesting that there are Bearded vultures in the UK let alone breeding!
