Eastern puma declared extinct

I am not sure if this has been reported elsewhere on the site, but today the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officially declared the Eastern puma (Puma concolor couguar) extinct, ending its 38 year long listing on the Endangered Species Act.

ARKive blog - In the News: Eastern puma declared extinct

There is a lot that the Nature Conservancy and ESA can and must to at home to protect native species. Thanks to the ***lumberjack years the USFWS was severely under attack and under-resourced! I wish we could do something about it. It remains a sobering thought that another local hero has gone down the drain ...

This has nothing to do with shooting. If the eastern cougar is declared extinct (which in all likelihood it is), than it is no longer warranted to be listed under the Endangered Species Act. This law goes far beyond direct harm to the animal (ie shooting) and goes into declaring critical habitat for said species and placing very tight restrictions on what one can do in that habitat.
