The latest births and arrivals at the zoo include:

1.0 Striped skunk arrived

0.0.3 Chestnut-backed thrushes hatched
0.0.4 Green-winged doves hatched
0.0.2 Nicobar pigeon hatched

And ALL the red river hogs have left the collection.

My mistake, the male is actually a female skunk that has come from Amneville zoo in France.
The Egyptian vulture pair have laid eggs.
The bird staff are currently hand rearing a violet touraco.

Does this mean Edinburgh now have 0.2 Striped Skunks? I know they had one for the 'Animal antics' display.

Brilliant news regarding the Egyptian Vultures! :D And to my knowledge Edinburgh have never bred them, I know it will be a Scottish first but what about the UK has any collection bred them in the 1960's or earlier/later?

Egyptian Vultures were first bred in 1978 at The National Bird of Prey Centre,Newent.
 
They have a male and a female striped skunk now. I have always wanted to see them but they were never out before, however this new female was out and about the last time i was there. Lovely to see

In that case you didn't look very hard,because I got the info off a pdf,I found on the web over christmas 2011,although that said I had got this breeding recorded in written notes that have on first breeding of Birds of Prey,but then I have a few species listed that are not on the pdf,because the people that have bred the species don't want,it being known they have bred the species.

Both skunks were highly visible and active today - my first sighting of the species in over 10 visits to the collection!

Also, it appears galago have *not* left the collection, as I observed a number of them in their usual enclosure.
 
A pair of Taiwan Beauty Snakes will shortly be arriving from Antwerp to become part of the presentations team

Ocellated Turkey has laid eggs and the Chestnut Backed thrush is nest building

What happened to Pandamonium?

Now the Giant Pandas are settled in and the initial excitement has died down, are they still pulling in the Visitors as expected?

Are there still organised queues at the exhibit at peak times or is there no need for that now?

Last time I visited - June 9th - it was still exceptionally busy all day long down by the pandas, and the queuing/ticketing system is still in action.

According to the zoo website, booking to see the pandas is currently extending to 30th September, and I'm given to understand there are no plans to scrap the system.

Absolutely. The queues were really long in mid June, with lots of people even waiting in the pouring rain. The zoo was much, much busier than last summer at the same time, and when the panda exhibit opened just before Christmas.

You should organise a visit and take a look.

I hope this gets translated into better financial status for the zoo.
(a zoo not to be helped by a very vision lacking Council ...).
 
Not sure of this has already been reported but there's exciting news in the current RZSS magazine.

Two female koalas from an Australian collection will be joining current residents Yabbra and Goonaroo in the autumn with the hope of establishing two breeding pairs.

Also, clarification on the penguin pool situation. The remodeling will take place in conjunction with the repairs (which makes much more sense than what was initially reported). The work should be completed and the birds returned by the end of the year. The pool will be known as "Penguins Rock" and feature a major revamp of the enclosure, including the addition of diving boards, slides, new viewpoints, enhanced interpretation and interactive elements.

Does anyone have any news about the status of the former sea lion / new rockhopper pool?

Last report was that they still had the Sealion (if he has since left then please ignore me!) and he wouldn't be leaving until the end of the Summer. Until he has gone, they can't start any work on the pool
