Education & fun fairs

Are today’s zoo’s taking parents of children for a ride and not really educating the children, by this I mean most not all zoos today have fun type rides or amusements around their collections costing more money for the parents and giving no education value to the children.

What have Crazy Golf, Remote Control Speed Boats, roller coasters, bumper cars, Amusement Arcades and the list goes on got to do with the education of children around a zoo.

Why not have books with a map of the zoo so children can write in what they have seen then questions about the animals in the collection they are going to see and if they are going to have rides and amusements why not have they based on wildlife.

I know some zoos relied on the income from such things but surely they could be based on the attraction so as to give children an insight into the animal world and not just oh it’s a day out with a fun fair at the end.

A day at the zoo should be both entertaining and educational but these days this seems to have been over looked with some collections as to let’s see how much money we can get from everyone through the gates.

I have also noticed that the signs on the enclosures are getting less and less informative about the species within the enclosure some only put the name of the species and no other information on the enclosure why have they cut down on the information given out?

This is not meant to offend or upset anyone it’s just a few questions I would like answers to.

I think this "issue" varies a lot between different zoos. Personally, if zoos are going to provide other attractions (which I have no problem with and often like) they should be unique attractions, such as rollercoasters or animal themed rides, rather than just the same old generic "fun fair" rides that look like they've been hired (which I presume some of them are?). Although there are some exceptions, like the carousel at London, which I think provides a nice historic touch to a historic zoo.

I think that such attractions provide more "bulk" to the average person's visit to the zoo and give people reasons to stay there for longer. I have an interest in rollercoasters and theme parks so I love to be able to mix up my animal viewings with rides and rollercoaster s as it gives the day a bit more variety. I think it all comes down to how well the attractions are intergrated into the park- the less tacky the better!
