Elephant smuggling in Thailand

I am not surprised there. I have always been convinced that despite vehement denials Thailand has been a conduit for illegal wildlife trafficking in the region and not just reptiles or primates.

What frustrates and angers me is that basically the captive elephant registration system is a giant loophole and fraudulent behavior can easily circumvent the clear cut Conservation Law on elephants in Thailand.

I would really like to see better captive elephant management in all South Indian and S.E. Asian countries, particularly those in private hands … The emphasis should be on conserving a sustainable wild population and some of the rescue centers being full up … they could be a source for rehabilitation.

When I was in Thailand over 12 years ago now the amount of ivory for sale and being carved was staggering, and a lot of it looked larger than the tusks often seen on Asian elephants.
