Elephants in the Dominican Republic

With records of over 4,200 individual elephants that have resided in North America (but many still to go), it is always exciting to find another. Miami animal dealer Alton Freeman sent this 3-year-old female Asian elephant “Mamie” to a new zoo in Ciudad Trujillo, Dominican Republic in January 1954. Did he import this animal himself or purchase it from a bigger group of new arrivals? I don’t know. What happened to this elephant? I don’t know that either! Can anyone help?
