Chester Zoo Elephants

Hello fellow zoo chatters :)

After a few recent visits to the zoo it appears that alot of the elephants are seperated from one another.

Obviously i am aware that Upali (the male elephant) will be seperated from the females.

Can anybody shed any light?

Thanks

Upali and Tunga are normally kept away from the females most of the time.

2 calves are also due later in the year so that could be a factor.

Thi is the mother of the other calf. One of them is due in July and the other in August (can't remember which way round though)

Wasn't it reported that Thi was starting to develop arthritis. Surely continuous breeding from her will start to worsen the arthritis.

However, she is a reliable breeding animal i suppose?

I believe that Sithami was due to give birth in Juli and Thi Ha Way in August.
Jangolie is already 42 and she had her last baby six year ago. The chances of her getting pregnant again will become very small if they wait a little more.

And than a question that pops into my head? Why do thay separate the elephants when they are pregnant. It is a family herd, in emmen the youngsters even get born outside in the middle of the herd surrounded by the mother, the aunts, the other baby elephants and even the breeding bull.
It is a natural thing (except for the presence of the bull) why do they split the herd up? Whipsnade does this alsow, is it a British way of housing elephants?:D

The female Elephants at Chester are only normally split at feeding time to make sure that Sheba can eat her food without the other taking her share as she only has 2 teeth left, most of the rest of the time the herd is kept together apart from the Bulls.

Whipsnade's case is a bit unusual- they have two females who will not live together so they have to keep two groups to give each female company. They do change the other animals around though.

Chester's group is normally kept together on a more regular basis.

Is Tunga now in the bull pen with Upali? or kept inside?

Also is there plans to move Tunga soon?

Hi,

I've just noticed that the strapline on the zoo's website says that, though tey're still on show, the elephants are being kept inside for the time being. I clicked on the strapline, which linked to the news page, but there was nothing about it on that page.

Does anyone know why they're being kept inside please?

Naomi
