Unlike the other two bonus matches which are kicking-off at the same time as this one, each of which gives a single non-progressing collection a chance to shine, we will be taking a look at *two* contenders which had a lot of potential to go far, but never quite made it off the starting block - the ZSL pair of London and Whipsnade on one hand, and Tiergarten Nuremberg on the other hand.

As such, you have five days to discuss three categories which are definite strengths for both competitors - TEMPERATE FOREST AND WOODLAND, GRASSLAND AND DESERT, and MOUNTAINS AND POLES - and determine which collection deserves the bragging-rights which come of winning this non-canonical match!

As with the other two bonus matches this time round, all three categories need to be considered!

Whipsnade is pretty much carrying the ZSL duo on its back here, but it does have a solid collection of woodland creatures in its "Europe" zone, and the large open paddocks for the grassland and desert creatures may not be overly flashy but shouldn't be overlooked.

Mountain and polar creatures... ehh... the rockhopper penguins? Yeah, I got nothing otherwise.

I know someone else can pu it better than me but I’ll throw in my two cents:

I can’t speak for zsl, but I think Nuremberg takes the cake. A dedicated desert house, polar bears (best species to represent poles despite only being from the north) and ungulates and birds of prey that fill in all the remaining subcategories. I don’t know if the Mediterraneum counts as grassland but if it does it is also a great exhibit mixing ground squirrels and reptiles (the latter being on display when the weather is great.)

Your comment suggests you intended to vote for Nuremberg, but your actual vote is heavily-balanced towards ZSL?

The natural setting of the Lorenzer Reichswald alone, with its steep slopes wooded with oaks and spruce, interspersed with rugged rock formations in red sandstone, give Nurnberg an unbeatable advantage: irrespective of the collection or the enclosures, this zoo is located in one of the most beautiful examples of temperate forest to be found.

Indeed. Furthermore every world-class exhibit from Nürnberg is covered within these categories (Desert house, Manati house, bearded vulture aviary, Mediterraneum, Fishing cat, Yellow throated marten). Not to mention several good exhibits with the distinctive sand stone (large cats, polar bears, alpine ibex). (Not to mention a lot more rather basic stuff)

Does ZSL have anything really outstanding to offer here?

A quiet one, as has been the case for all of the bonus matches, but a resounding victory for Nuremberg:

ZSL vs Nuremberg - TEMPERATE FORESTS, GRASSLAND AND DESERT, and MOUNTAINS AND POLES

ZSL - 21/55 points - 38.182%
Nuremberg - 34/55 points - 61.818%
