The next match pits two of the most highly-regarded zoological collections in Europe - one a relative newcomer which hits well above its size and scale, the other the oldest extant zoo in the world and a collection which has met the challenge posed by modern zoological standards with aplomb - against one another.

The category is one for which both collections can present a strong case - BIRDS - and it is the task of everyone participating within the Cup to decide which collection is most convincing and vote correspondingly.

Burger's is lucky for this one. The birds in the Bush, Mangrove and Desert have a lot of space. They also keep lots of rarities in their bird collection. So overall I think 3-2 is in order until somebody presents the Schönbrunn offerings in this category.

With this bird list I would say, 3:2 for Vienna.

Both zoos are strong contenders in this category, with extensive collections full of rarities. That said, I must admit I’ve always had a soft spot for the antartica penguins, which you can find in Vienna, even if their enclosure is not particularly inspiring.

One of Vienna’s key strengths lies in how it successfully blends historical architecture with modern aviary design. This contrast creates a unique atmosphere. However, the way Burgers’ Zoo presents its bird species primarily in the Bush, Desert, and Mangrove habitats is, in truth, without many real comparison in Europe.

From the Screaming Piha calling through the jungle in the Bush, to the sense of discovery and exploration these ecodisplays offer, the experience feels remarkably close to birdwatching in the wild. The immersion, the searching, the photography – it all mirrors nature in a way that few, if any, traditional aviaries can match.

And ultimately, isn’t that one of the highest goals of any modern zoo? To create moments that bring us as close as possible to the natural world? In that respect, I simply have to award the win to Burgers’ Zoo.

So for now, that brings the score to 3–2 in their favour, though honestly, you might be able to convince me to make it 4–1.

Especially with the closed rainforest house i don't see a win for Schönbrunn here. A lovely bird house, a nice northern bald ibis walkthrough and a few more basic aviaries, with a nice stock list. Also at the bird house, the stock isn't as good as it used to be a few years ago. Probably Viennas biggest strength is the breeding success with the northern rockhopper penguins, so 3:2 for the Dutch one

Maybe one thing more about Vienna. Schönbrunn is one of the few zoos to keep clipped red legged seriemas.

I agree with what @Haasje writes: the level of immersion is so high in Burgers that this defeats Vienna's qualities, which are on a different - historical-architectural - plane. In terms of collections, it is very hard to choose, with so many rare species on both sides. Should a draw be allowed, that score would be up for consideration for me in this match (surely if Vienna's rainforest would be fully open).

Burgers won me over for the Mangrove, Bush and Desert before both for vote and future visit intentions. Vienna has some really good looking things too and I do really love how they use their historical aviaries. What fine places to see birds these appear. A close thing but 3/2 Burgers currently.
