Two collections which have everything to play for, and a category with a massive amount of scope for discussion and debate - ECTOTHERMS.

Hopefully the resulting match will continue the upwards trend in voting, discussion and overall activity from those participating!

This one feels pretty clear-cut for Wroclaw, between the massive and speciose reptile house, the small but very choice aquarium, the excellent Odrarium, and a variety of other category exhibits scattered throughout the zoo in the Afrykarium, Desert House, Madagascar House.

Conversely, Leipzig has rather little to offer barring a smattering of species and exhibits in Gondwanaland, and the aquarium building - which is good enough to ensure that Leipzig earns a single point and is spared a complete wash-out. It should be noted that the Terrarium at the zoo was demolished several years ago and is yet to be replaced.

Overall, an easy 4-1 for Wroclaw.

I decided to look up the Odrarium... and I think it's genuinely neat. Taking the concept of making an exhibit based on one of your own rivers is a nice choice, especially a large one like the Oder.

I haven't seen the Leipzig's renovated aquarium yet, but I don't believe they have a chance against Wroclaw in this category. The Polish zoo improved the exhibit quality in Terrarium which boost very impressive collection.
4:1.

I think Leipzig has some unlucky draws. The reptile house of Wroclaw itself makes it a heavy hitter and then the rest comes in. And although much smaller the Afrikarium can match Godwanaland on it's own in this category. I think this is a category of species where Leipzig is relatively weak even with aquarium so also for me a 4-1 although I have doubted to go for 5-0.

Very unlucky draw for Leipzig again.

Worclaw's reptile house has a first class species line-up but rather poor exhibitry.
It is literally crammed with terrariums and it is one of those zoo buildings reminiscent of a warehouse: there are corridors everywhere and animals can be found right down to the stairwells. The decor certainly doesn't provide a wow factor, although the terrariums for geckos and tarantulas are definitely worth seeing. Then again, others are far too small, and I found the enclosure for Komodo dragons really disappointing aesthetically.

Actually, the building - originally a restaurant -, which dates from 1885, is quite worthwhile in its own, especially for those who like architecture and history.

As with birds, Leipzig has some interesting species in this category, but so does Wroclaw. However, Leipzig is again completely outnumbered when it comes to the number of species.

Therefor I vote 4-1 but I certainly still take others' arguments into account. What is f.e. the quality of the ectotherm exhibits in Gondwanaland, which I haven't seen yet.

It's worth noting that ZTL is heavily outdated where reptiles and amphibians are concerned - due to the demolition and (planned) rebuilding of the Terrarium, more or less all of the reptile and amphibian species listed are either absent or offshow. More or less the only major species still onshow in this regard are the Komodo Dragon visible within Gondwanaland, and a smattering of free-roaming animals within the same exhibit complex.

And the false gharials where at least one of them has an impressive size. More thoughts to Wroclaw will follow later.

Ah yes - I'd somehow forgotten the Sunda Gharial despite seeing them only a few weeks ago :p as you note, one of their individuals is a pretty decent size.

I think it's a real pity that Leipzigs Terrarium hasn't opened yet, as this would be a very interesting match for Wroclaw. Let's start with the Afrykarium. The smaller fish tanks between the sea lions and penguins are for some species definitely very small. One can't say this about the larger tanks within the building but most of theme are kind of badly executed for the visitors (either kind of unlucky viewing axis and/or lights could be done way better). I still have to admit that the tanks are impressing, but being just large is nothing that special.

Regarding the terrarium building i'm not sure whetter it a benefit for this category or not. The species line up is amazing and the building itself is charming. The rest of the building is *ughh*. A bunch of the exhibits at the house are either too small or too overcrowded and the terrarium style isn't my cup of tea (especially at the upper floor). Clearly this house would benefit from a major facelift in the near future. The aquarium building is fine, but nothing special. Therefore the Odrarium is a lovely exhibit. I also like the replicated river at the visitor way.

I haven't seen the new aquarium at Leipzig by myself but from pictures it looks pretty nice. Gondwanaland has some nice aquariums too. For instance there are three different species of lung fishes or a larger one for south Americans fish like Arapaimas. Beside the already mentioned Komodo dragons and Gharials there are also some turtles and frogs exhibited beside a few free roamers. Personally i would also say, that the ectotherm exhibits at Gondwanaland are slightly better than many of the mammal exhibits.

I think i will go 3:2 for now open to further arguments as it is close to 4:1 for me.

In addition to remar's post:

I think that in the Afrykarium the metre-high aquariums dedicated to the Lake Tangayika and Lake Malawi, right after the aardvark exhibit, are pretty impressive tanks.

And both crocodile exhibits in the rainforest part of the Afrykarium can stand their ground too.

I'd be interested in hearing arguments from @Kieras36 as the other individual giving two points to Leipzig - lets see if you can convince anyone else to give more credit to the collection in question!

After visiting both Wroclaw and Leipzig zoos over the past two years, I’ve come to a conclusion that might strike some as unexpected or even controversial. But speaking purely from a personal perspective, I found Leipzig to be the more enjoyable zoo experience, especially in certain key aspects.

One of the highlights of my visit to Leipzig was the recently renovated aquarium. I found it absolutely stunning, beautifully designed and full of fascinating displays. In addition, the Gondwanaland tropical hall was a brilliant immersive experience to see some reptiles.

By contrast, my visit to Wroclaw Zoo felt less pleasant overall. I did appreciate the Odrarium, I thought it was a clever and well-executed way to highlight local species, which often don’t get the attention they deserve.
The Afrykarium, too, was undeniably impressive in scale and ambition. However, if I’m being critical, I found that many of the enclosures throughout the Afrykarium and zoo were less aesthetically pleasing and didn’t feel particularly special in their design. Another issue I had was the extensive use of cross-viewing between exhibits, within the Afrykarium, which I personally find distracting and immersion-breaking.

What ultimately tipped the scales for me, though, was the Terrarium in Wroclaw. It felt like an endless maze of small enclosures and narrow corridors. While the reptile and amphibian collection is no doubt excellent, the layout made the experience uncomfortable and disorienting. I genuinely felt like I couldn’t get out of there fast enough, it’s one of the least pleasant zoo buildings I’ve ever visited.

So, while I absolutely respect the strength of Wroclaw Zoo’s collection for ectotherms, I’d personally much rather see these animals in Leipzig. The overall visitor experience there simply felt more thoughtful, relaxing, and enjoyable.

Fancy posting any up to date images of the aforementioned aquarium?

I’m not sure how to upload pictures here, but you can find a enough pictures in the ZooChat gallery. Additionally, various videos showcasing the new aquarium with its excellent design within a historic building are available on YouTube. One of the most interesting is the special episode featuring "Elefant, Tiger & Co."

I’m not sure how to upload pictures here, but you can find a enough pictures in the ZooChat gallery.

The problem is that the vast, vast majority of the photographs taken in the aquarium within the gallery are from *prior* to its closure and extensive renovation, and are therefore of limited value for the purposes of this discussion.

As for how to upload pictures, you seem to have uploaded 177 photographs to the gallery in the past so I would assume you are well-aware of how to do so :D

A quieter match than I had hoped - there was definitely potential for more discussion and debate here, which might have led to a less inbalanced vote:

Wroclaw - 67/90 points - 74.444%
Leipzig - 23/90 points - 25.556%
