Hi,

I'm a big lover of genre shows and movies. Marvel, Star Wars, Fantasy. The thing that bums me out is the negativity within almost all fandoms, not the whole fandoms but there is within all fandoms a definite current of negativity.

I am first and formost a Tolkien fan. I read the books multiple times and watch The Lord of the rings trilogy every year and the hobbit movies every two or three years. I read the Vanity Fair piece on the Rings of Power show and watched the first trailer and am excited, but then i go on YouTube and just get bombarded with negativity.

How do you guys feel about this ?

I don't think you should let other people's opinions have an effect on your personal enjoyment of things. That being said, critique is also important and we shouldn't view any criticisms of something as hate... if you think a negative fandom is effecting your opinion of something you like however, maybe you should not interact with them.

Talking about Tolkien, I just watched the LOTR trilogy back to back for the first time this weekend with some friends. We started in the early afternoon and it took until past midnight! Was a blast though and I'm glad I finally saw those movies.

Congradualtions on your first LOTR viewing. I recently watched it in 4k it was like wachting it for the first time all over again.

There is nothing wrong with critism. We can't all love the same things. I like redding reviews even the more negative ones.

I'm talking about the all or nothing mentality. If i don't like it nobody is allowed to enjoy it. Bombarding review sites with 1's and one star reviews. Taking over the conversation on social media outputs (btw i'm off all social media). That accompanied with a whole lot of rascism and bigotry. This wasn't always the case, it has got a lot worse in recent years.

Maybe this Pieter soms it up :

Honestly, it’s just human nature. If you go somewhere and have a great experience, you might tell one person; if you go somewhere and have a negative experience, you tell five people.

Similarly, how many people have ever tipped up at the front counter of Nandos to tell them their chicken’s decent? Yet, if it was even slightly undercooked, we’d all be up here giving them both barrels.

Negativity leads to discussion, which is why discussion boards are full of it. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially if the criticism is constructive - and can lead to the generation of new ideas.
