Fantastic animal illustrators

Aweosme- and i bet there are more golden monkeys in them pictures than there actualyl are in the wild!
 
Another excellent author/illustrator of animals is Gragam Base. One of my favourites is The Waterhole.

i recognised the style straight away. the illustrators name is Terryl Whitlach and yes, she is an absolute talent!!

she did an aweful lot of the conceptual art for the new Star Wars films and i own a gorgeous book by the artist called "the wildlife of star wars", which is essentially a massive encyclopedia of every animal in every star wars film. i'm pretty sure there is a sister volume called "the people of star wars" cataloguing all the human-like alien designs.

even if your not a massive Star Wars fan (i'm not) the creature designs are top notch, and if you know your animals you can see where all the real-life inspiration comes from.

i think Graham Base comes up with great ideas for kids books, and don't get me wrong i grew up with Animalia and The Eleventh Hour in my bookshelf like any other kid raised in the 80's. naturally, they were among my favorite books.

but as an artist, he hasn't so much as improved a smidge over the last two decades. his work relied heavily on reference photographs and he struggles with perspective without them. his understanding of animal anatomy is also pretty poor and if he needs to extrapolate any part of the animal, he often gets things drastically wrong.

which is all pretty astonishing when you consider that the guy makes a living from predominantly painting animals.

he actually needs to go back to the basics and do some life drawing/anatomy studies!!!
 
There is one person I believe in England, his paintings of wildlife sell for approximately $45-55k AU, take approximately 4-6 months to paint. But by crikey, I almost swear I'm looking at a photo, I was absolutely stunned and blown away when I saw his art. When my computer is back up and fully operational, I'll run a search and try to track down his homepage again!

as for this artist, he obviously paints direct from photo reference. now don't get me wrong its skill in itself and this guy's got it - just that its the sort of thing i expect to see hanging above a mantle in the suburbs. or on a beach towel....

not very inspiring to me.
