Not counting my actual fantasy zoo, the Phil Collins Wildlife Trek which I did for giggles, I have only published one speculative zoo plan with serious effort. My project is based on a real zoo, Kobe Animal Kingdom, so I don’t have the challenge of building something from the ground up, which would require research and knowledge of the area the zoo is being built to. Before writing my draft I shared my plans with one other user who is familiar with the facility and got suggestions from them as well. I took the wildlife regulations and zoo holdings of the country where the zoo is located (Japan) so I could come up with a more grounded collection plan than something that would be unrealistic. I also set some rules for the amount of new land I can acquire since the park I worked on is located in an urban location.
There are a handful of threads on the Speculative Zoo Design and Planning subforum which could act as great resources for mixed species enclosures, geographic distribution of animals, and exhibit design. If you want to alter an existing zoo to run your way, then you can check the most recent reviews and species list to understand what you are working with. Since my plan for Kobe Animal Kingdom mostly consisted of removing and replacing species without great alterations to the exhibit, I decided that I didn’t need pictures of enclosures of other zoos to use as a placeholder for exhibit plans. Instead referred people to the most recent review of KAK since, Chlidonias, the author of the review also uploaded pictures of the enclosures.
I technically finished the first part of my project. The second part is giving the zoo more liberty to obtain new species, under the condition that they can be properly kept in captivity, and their rarity is only a result of mismanagement and a lack of interest rather than lack of legal sourcing and impossible husbandry.
