I know there's already a great ape thread but I thought I'd make one specifically based on orangutans. If you enjoy this one gorillas and chimps could be coming soon :)

I voted Bornean since that is what we have at ZooTampa, but I really like them all. I hope that I can see Tamanuli in person someday.

Same as me although I did vote Tapanuli purely for that reason! The fact that there are none in captivity makes them extra special for me.

I chose Sumatran since I pretty much see Bornean in almost every zoo that has orangutans; and that I personally prefer the way the males look when compared to a Bornean.

That is true. I regularly see bornean which probably also sent me down the Tapanuli route. It's interesting actually because at Zoo Atlanta they mix both Bornean and Sumatran orangutans together which is helpful in differentiating between sub species.

Gosh, didn't know this. I presume this was only recently found out? o_O

A year or so ago, I believe :) @MagpieGoose knows more about the subject than I do, as he keeps up to date with research on the captive genetics of orangutans - he should be able to provide a list of confirmed f1 hybrids.

It most definitely does.... and from memory Atlanta is one of the places known to have Sumatran/Tapanuli hybrids as it is!
So technically Atlanta could make a hybrid of all three orangutan species!!!????? In all my years of visiting I have never thought if this but I do remember reading it a while back.
